Get a mac not a pc- that way you don’t have things like antivirus and a billions-of-times-overwritten operating system slowing you down. Other than that: get the best you can afford. Sounds obvious but it’s true: if I were you I’d save and wait until I could afford at least an intel mac- they’re faster processors and also allow you to run snow leopard: so 64 bit, open gl and gcd make it faster again.

“sun glare” is a fairly generic term, but in most cases, no is the simple answer- especially with iMovie. If you mean flare, then almost certainly not. If you mean an overexposed section, then again not easily- overexposure means the data is lost from that part of the picture, and I don’t think iMovie offer particularly good (if any) selectional editing tools. Even in FC the only thing you can really do is to apply colour correctionand/ or decrease exposure to a section, which is probably gonna look crap. Sorry to be the voice of bad news! Although you could load a screenshot and see if anything can be done based on a bit more knowledge on our end…

OSX uses drivers kinda, but just tends to work better- I’m not necessarily a fanboy but ive never heard any problems with midi devices via USB, especially not with logic or protools. But then I’m not a sound engineer or a musician, so I wouldnt spend hundreds on my opinion…

Firstly I just realised- hi Jason, I didn’t know you were on here! I’m the guy who phoned from that production company that time… Haha (don’t wanna be specific cos I’m not sure what the rules and etiquette suggest )!
Hi Matt- I just got back from editing a TV Documentary on a slightly older albeit 8 core mac pro with hyper threading with 16GB of RAM and honestly don’t notice much difference between that and my current iMac config. I mean, I wasn’t timing or anything, but I remember when I had the old 2.93ghz 24″ iMac I really noticed a huge difference, which is hopefully an encouraging sign for you- you should love it! I obviously use FCP with a few olivine, and frequently render out stuff from HD acquisitions such as the EX series, and it runs like a dream- obviously top spec HD is a little tougher, but prores everything and it’s all as cool as the new old spice adverts.😀

Thats odd, and an issue I’ve never heard before. I work for an apple premium reseller, we’re not technicians but we do this all the time and havent had any problems that I can think of- just make sure you get the right knd of ram (I believe it’ll be 1066mhz) and you should be fine. Also I would advise not going for the cheapest you can find, faulty ram can cause things like kernel panics; we sell Kingston, which is very good stuff. Installing it is a cinch, depends on which model you have but the worst youll have to do is unscrew a few screws and literally cram the stuff in there haha. People recommend you ground yourself first though, so you are not statically charged, but again, this is not something we worry too much about and I’ve personally never had issues, even after doing it to hundreds of macs.

Hmmm…..hmmm…….hmmmm……………………………yeah, so thats why i suggested pulling away a physical green screen, because Im sure bitmapping an image to a keyed “layer” isnt massively hard to do (I seem to remember motion having the ability to do something like this…) But you guys are making some very good points…. back to the drawing board perhaps….

Matt, thank you, that was both informative and a little encouraging as well, which is always nice (not like when I went onto another “shall not be named forum” about my Z5 and everyone was like “WAH WAH WAH ITS CRAP COS ITS HDV” I was like… “thanks guys….for the friendly advice….” haha). And thanks to everyone else so far as well, of course.
Anyway, what do we think about the Lumix GH1 in comparison? Does the 550D still come out on top for Video purposes?
Also (this has been asked somewhere else as well)- whats the bitrate of the 550d? Is it about 50Mbps like the 5D?😀
