How does music sound “outside”?

What kind of music?

Do you mean music heard from “off in the distance?”

Generally, live music performed out in the open will have very little reverb, as there are no walls to quickly reflect the sound.

Problem is, most recordings already have the reverb added into the track, and you can’t remove that.

Maybe if you were more specific as to the effect you want…

There is a “LEVELS” pull-down that allows you to set an exact number (or percentage of a number) of dB up or down (not just + or – 3 dB).

Don’t need a deck for this (although that will work great) because all DV camcorders can be set to display the TC on their video outputs.

So I agree, set the deck or camcorder to display the TC, and dub to a DVD recorder in real-time.

If you are viewing on the computer screen…
this is one of THE most-misunderstood situations with FCP:

It is essential when attempting to monitor the QUALITY of images in FCP that you use an external NTSC VIDEO Monitor (or PAL, if that’s where you are).
Especially after you render…
the Canvas is never high-quality (by design) and should not be used to make determinations of image quality of clips or graphics.

I own a UVW-1800 (similar mechanism to your 1600) that was doing the same thing.

I suffered with intermittent threading/non-threading for months.

I finally took it to a local service tech to check-out (he works all over town at many of the production houses as their chief “tech guy”).

He said that it was VERY COMMON on these decks (he probably services several dozen BSP decks in town) and said he could fix the problem (which he did, within a couple of days.)

He said these decks need to be LUBED on a regular basis (most users don’t).
If not, they will wear out a couple of internal parts and stop threading (among other problems).
He had to replace a couple of mechanical parts (gave me the old ones) and my deck has worked great ever since.

I suggest finding a good tech (who knows Sony decks) and have the unit fixed.

There is a function in FCP that is often overlooked… and it can help with many audio and video “skipping”, “sticking” and “missing” problems.

You should “Mixdown” the Audio for playback before you dub out of FCP, or during the edit, if you have audio/video stuttering, drop-outs, sync-slippage, or freezes.

NOTE: Mixdown has even been demonstrated to help with slipping, skipping problems (or “missing” audio clips) for files being EXPORTED as QT (or similar) files out of FCP.

First, SELECT ALL of your audio tracks (highlight them) on the timeline, then:

Sequence Menu > Render Only > Mixdown.

You should see a dialog box telling you its rendering.

It might seem to make little sense that “Mixing down” even simple audio tracks will “fix” complex video “freezes” or random audio dropouts to tape or export, but it CAN.

NOTE: It does not matter of you only have one audio track, if there are random freezes during output, you should try the Mixdown.

Try turning on the “Auto Select” button on the track that has the edit in question.

They are the little square buttons next to the track LOCK buttons on the left edge of the timeline.

Even if the SONG was PD, the PERFORMANCE (recording) would most likely be copyrighted.

Unless you’re using Edison wax cylinders or 78 rpm pressings, its likely you’d be breaking someone’s ownership of the performance and/or song.

If you want to stay SAFE, use a “music clearing service” to check these things.

I think you’ll find, however, that unless you have a very large budget, you will only be able to use specific CD of “production music” in most cases.
