EQ’ing for OUTSIDE
Posted by Paco Sweetman on January 29, 2007 at 7:34 pmHey all.
What is the best way to EQ some music (and tools to use) to make some music sound as though it’s playing outside.
thanks
Jon

January 29, 2007 at 8:01 pmYou question is kinda’ like why is the sky blue? There are so many variables. Outdoor where? Like at a concert, a backyard patio etc. There’s really no exact answer. But, try these ideas until it sounds close to what you think is correct.
As far as which effects to use, First, I’d add pretty heavy compression to the music track as that will take it away from sounding like a ‘real’ music track and give it an FM quality. Then add reverb (try different size halls or rooms) Then, add some bass as most concerts always have the bass cranked and that usually overwelms the upper frequencies. If your going for a backyard and some speakers mounted on a patio. Then cut the bass as tiny speakers don’t have much.
Hope that helps get you started.

January 29, 2007 at 8:05 pmHow does music sound “outside”?
What kind of music?
Do you mean music heard from “off in the distance?”
Generally, live music performed out in the open will have very little reverb, as there are no walls to quickly reflect the sound.
Problem is, most recordings already have the reverb added into the track, and you can’t remove that.
Maybe if you were more specific as to the effect you want…
