“Hard to believe, but
DPI has no meaning in video.
Only the dimensions affect the quality.
When you reduced the DPI, you also cut the dimensions by about 30%.
That is what you really need to know.For instance, a 720 x 540 image at 72 dpi is the same video quality as a 720 x 540 image at 300 dpi.

How can he TELL that the tapes have 44.1 kHz audio recorded on them?
Do these tapes play on YOUR deck?
If so, then, since DVCAM decks can only play 32 kHz and 48 kHz audio, how is it that they play on YOUR deck?
(Using Logic: If A=B and B=C, then, A=C.)
I’m thinking that if your tapes don’t play audio well on his deck, its more like a head alignment / tracking issue.

We have a DVCam deck with Insert Edit mode.
But-you need to CONTROL the deck with RS-422 and not Firewire.
Many DV decks do not have Insert Edit as a feature..

In film, to get smooth slow-mo they shoot with the camera “over-cranked” at speeds faster than normally shot.
If they want half-speed they shoot the camera at 48 frames per second, yet they project it at the normal play speed of sound film, 24 frames per second. It is very smooth.
If they want quarter-speed they shoot at 96 frames per second but then project it at the normal play speed of sound film, 24 frames per second. It is still very smooth.
The problem in video is that to get a slow-mo effect during the edit with footage shot with MOST video cameras, the only way to get it is to shoot at normal speed of 30 frames per second, but play that footage (adjust how the frames are displayed on the timeline in the edit process) at a slower rate.
Half speed would mean showing each frame for twice as long, or 15 frames per second, not an extremely smooth way to display the frames.
Quarter-speed would mean showing each frame for four times as long as usual, or (roughly) only 7 frames per second.
Not smooth at all, and quite strobed-looking.Your best look in video will be to set the slow motion effect at 1/3 (10 frames per sec.) or, better, 1/2 speed (15 frames per second.)
Experiment with and without using the “frame blending” setting.

It is essential when attempting to monitor the QUALITY of images in FCP that you use an external NTSC VIDEO Monitor (or PAL, if that’s where you are).
Especially after you render…
the Canvas is never high-quality (by design) and should not be used to make determinations of image quality of clips or graphics.If you position the graphics, make SURE the VERTICAL setting for each KEY-FRAME (start, stop or hold) is always a EVEN INTEGER. (examples: 4, not 3 / -144, not -143.27 / 336, not 335.62)
I sometimes forget to check this and I can end up with images that look fuzzy when in-position.
This info applies to re-positioning ANYTHING on the Timeline: moving video, freeze-frames, internally-generated titles, and imported graphics.
It can be quite detrimental to the quality of your final output to not double-check this every time you reposition and/or re-size an image.

As was mentioned, the average level of the original recordings of the voice and the music tracks make an enormous difference in the amount of gain-reduction you need to apply to the music for the mix.
If you compress the tracks, that will affect the relative levels as well.
I typically reduce the music by 6, 10, 12, 18, 20, 24, 30dB depending on various factors.
No “rule-of-thumb” fits this wide range of situations.
Also, many audio editors apply a “dip” in the frequency (EQ) of the music in the “voice frequencies,” to allow the voice to be heard… but leaving the music (frequencies not in the voice-range) much louder.

Even with the milliseconds displayed, it won’t be in any way “accurate to the millisecond” as during EACH recorded frame, 33+ milliseconds will have ticketed-by for the frame’s duration.
Each successive frame of video will be 33+ milliseconds in length.
Standard film and video are very inaccurate and imprecise in recording and working with such high speeds and short time-measurements.
