Others answered your 1). I’ll give an answer to 2. Yes, there is probably at least a small difference in reliability between -R and +R disks. All other factors held constant, the +R disk should be more reliable than the -R disks. -R disk on the other hand seem to hold a tiny edge in compatibility.
There are straightforward technical reasons for the improved reliability from +R disks, and you can find these detailed in articles on the web.

Render using the MainConcept AVC codec (if you want H.264), chose the resolution you want and the PAR you want. Essentially, if you are rendering HD, you should go for 640×480 PAR 1.3333 or 852×480 PAR 1.0000 (I think it is).

July 10, 2007 at 1:30 pm in reply to: Change screen size for HD Window Media files…Not sure I get what you mean here, but HD (with a 1.0 PAR) is 1920 or 1280 wide. If you want full HD quality, this is going to be the size of your windows media player.
For my website I render to 640×360, half the width and height of the smaller of the typical HD formats. Obviously, when I drop the resolution, the quality (total) is lower than in full HD.
Experiment with the various sizes, you can render to any size with most of the codecs, and find out what you think is the best compromise between resolution, frame rate, bit rate etc.

I think the extra CCD is well worth the price for an SD camcorder. I have been very happy with the color representation of my Panasonic PV-GS400. I did however feel I traded up when I sold it and for an additional $100 got myself a Canon HV20 HDV camcorder.

I render HDV to DivX, WMV, H.264 (select “Custom” and add your own presets) etc.

As George is pointing out, the size of the rendered file is independent of framerate and most other things. The only thing that matters is the length of your movie and the bitrate. Since it is bps(econd) and not bpf(rame), the file size should be more or less identical for 60i and 24p material.
The 24p material should be of higher quality at the same bitrate however, since you have more bits per frame available.
In theory, if you encode 24fps at 20% lower bitrate than 60i 24fps, you should get similar quality. Haven’t tried this though.

If you are using it for capture only, any system bought in the past 5 years will work fine. Capture of HDV isn’t resource intensive. I’d get one HD for the system and one for the capture, but there is no need for RAID or anything fancy.

It actually depends on the player used to watch the movie, but all players I have used, will scale down.

I agree with Mike, go with as much screen real estate as you can afford. You don’t need it however. I edit HD on a 1680×1050 monitor just fine. Obviously, if you view 1080p content, it will have to be scaled down to your monitor resolution.

No. In fact, it would make me even turn you towards a firewire solution. When you capture video like that, many solutions use your soundcard to encode the audio. You then have the USB and the sound card competing for CPU time, and I can almost guarantee that you will see delays in audio and mismatched audio and video.
If you want to digitize your old videos, go get a Canopus ADVC-110 or a 300, depending on your budget, and a firewire card. I spent time capturing VHS and stuff using other solutions and it wasn’t fun at all. Canopus is good and recommended.
And forget about USB, it is like to give you nightmares.
