You can export a fully customized H.264 file from Vegas. This will be fully functional on any Mac. The .mov format is a wrapper as far as I know, in the same way .avi is a wrapper. I don’t think Vegas uses the .mov wrapper for H.264, but I am not sure why that would be an issue.
What is the reason you need the H.264 video to have a .mov wrapper?

There should be no drop in quality. Again, there is probably some issue with your work flow. Can you start from scratch and detail each and every step, including specifying what source your video events have?

August 5, 2007 at 5:11 pm in reply to: Black frame around 16:9 after rendering to AVIVegas will do the right thing if you use the correct work flow. It will never squish the image or add black bars unless you want it to. The work flow should be as follows:
- Project settings are NTSC-DV, 720×480, Pixel Aspect Ratio 1.2121 (NTSC Widescreen)
- Render to NTSC-DV Widescreen
- Watch movie on PC, there should be no bars anywhere.

If your movie after this comes out incorrectly, the problem lies with your “technically oriented friend”.

I don’t think you really need NEO if you have Vegas, but it does improve the work flow a little. As far as I can see, but I am happy to be corrected on this, if you capture with Vegas to M2T files, open these in Vegas and render them to the Cineform intermediate codec, you should get the same result (more or less) as you get by using NEO. You should then edit the new AVIs rather than the captured M2Ts.
You can improve the work flow by some creativity and VDub, so that you can batch-convert your captured footage to the cineform codec.
This will not work for 24p footage, but you can get free software that will perform the pull-down for you and save the result as a cineform intermediate. More about that on https://www.hv20.com/

This bitrate is too high for DVD. This means that DVD Architect will have to re-encode your MPEG-2 stream for DVD, which accounts for the second generation quality loss.
The fact that you are not getting commercial quality DVD from HDV is not a huge surprise, the commercial DVDs are encoded with very different techniques than you have available in regular video editing and DVD burning software. They simply have more money and the ability to encode far better than is possible for you and me.
Still, from an HDV source you should be getting very good results. It really depends on the source footage.

The camera output is not distorted. The camera records in 1440×1080. Yes, you should use the Vegas HDV template. It will all look great in the end.

Probably not. When rendering to DV-AVI Widescreen, the project should come out in 16×9. Why do you think it is 4×3? What player are you using that shows it at 4×3?

This is because when you render it to DV, Vegas (correctly) crops the picture and adds the frame around it to avoid “squishing” the image.

HDV, if that is what we are looking at here, is native 1440×1080 in full HD. The camcorder chip may have recorded in native 1920×1080, but what comes off the tape/HD/memory is 1440×1080, PAR 1.33333. Since you are talking about 1440×1080 I assume you are talking about HDV, and not native HD. If you are indeed talking about native HD, then you should not use the HDV template on your project but rather an HD template. Below I am assuming you are talking about HDV however, a camcorder like the Canon HV20 or similar.
When you render it you will either render to HDV 1440×1080 and your device will display this on a 1920×1080 display by stretching pixels horizontally, or you will render as 1920×1080 and your rendering software will do the pixel stretching for you.
Finally, if you do not shoot HDV, but have one of the (very expensive) camcorders that shoot native HD, then you should not use the Vegas HDV template for your project but rather an HD template in native 1920×1080. You do this by doing File -> New, select HD 1080 60i (or other matching) template.

1440×1080 with a PAR of 1.33333 is the same as 1920×1080 with PAR of 1.0. Check your self. 1440 multiplied by 1.33333 = 1920.
So. You should edit in 1440×1080 with a Pixel Aspect Ratio of 1.3333.
