Pixel size ratio for HD
Posted by Joe Gaziv on August 3, 2007 at 9:22 amI shoot Hi-Def (1080i 16:9). To my understanding that ratio means that the output frame size will be 1920x1080i. However the Vegas 7 template for 1080i is 1440×1080 (IE 4:3 ratio). I have two questions:
1. Does it mean my footage will be distorted while editing ?
2. What should be my set-up in order to get the output not distorted (IE getting it right on Hi-Def TV (ratio of 1.78)).Terje A. bergesen replied 18 years, 9 months ago 2 Members · 5 Replies -

August 3, 2007 at 12:23 pm1440×1080 with a PAR of 1.33333 is the same as 1920×1080 with PAR of 1.0. Check your self. 1440 multiplied by 1.33333 = 1920.
So. You should edit in 1440×1080 with a Pixel Aspect Ratio of 1.3333.

August 3, 2007 at 9:12 pmDoes it mean that the native footage is 1920×1080 and while it is being loaded to the timeline it gets shrink to 1440×1080 (so it loses some of the pixel info) and when it is being rendered it gets blowned up back to 1920×1080 due to aspect ratio being set to 1.3333 (IE the pixel info is being just blowned up or extrapulated but the initial info was lost any how) ?

August 3, 2007 at 10:31 pmHDV, if that is what we are looking at here, is native 1440×1080 in full HD. The camcorder chip may have recorded in native 1920×1080, but what comes off the tape/HD/memory is 1440×1080, PAR 1.33333. Since you are talking about 1440×1080 I assume you are talking about HDV, and not native HD. If you are indeed talking about native HD, then you should not use the HDV template on your project but rather an HD template. Below I am assuming you are talking about HDV however, a camcorder like the Canon HV20 or similar.
When you render it you will either render to HDV 1440×1080 and your device will display this on a 1920×1080 display by stretching pixels horizontally, or you will render as 1920×1080 and your rendering software will do the pixel stretching for you.
Finally, if you do not shoot HDV, but have one of the (very expensive) camcorders that shoot native HD, then you should not use the Vegas HDV template for your project but rather an HD template in native 1920×1080. You do this by doing File -> New, select HD 1080 60i (or other matching) template.

August 4, 2007 at 10:36 amSorry of not being clear – Yes, I meant HDV coming from HDR-HC7. Now, just to be sure I understand the answer – Is the output from the camera distorted in the horizontal direction (vs the reality)if it was recorded in HDV 16:9 format (since it was recorded with much more horizontal pixels than the output which is just 1440 pixels horizontally ?) Now another one, should I use in Vegas 7 the template named HDV 1080i (1.33) and render to it – Should I get the same horizontal pixel stretching like was coming originally from the camera ?

August 4, 2007 at 7:23 pmThe camera output is not distorted. The camera records in 1440×1080. Yes, you should use the Vegas HDV template. It will all look great in the end.
