Do I really need a 1200×1080 monitor
Posted by Philippe Orlando on July 3, 2007 at 2:34 amI’m going to get Vegas to edit HDV footage from a HV20 or a sony V1
Since HDV is 1440×1080 and extrapolates to 1920x 1080 do I absolutely need a 1920×1080 monitor to edit it? Other than seeing a smaller image, what other problems will I run into if I use a 1600 x 1200 monitor to edit my HDV footage? Or if I can’t afford a 1920×1080 should at least go with a wide screen aspect ration such as 1280×1050 rather than 1600×1200?
Thanks

July 3, 2007 at 3:31 amIf you can afford it, go for a 1920 x 1200.
The extra screen size alone is worth it 🙂
I got a Dell 2407 24″ earlier this year and remain very impressed with it.
It’s the one that’s recommended by several Vegas users.
Costco USA has it for $610.00 (incl. shipping). -

July 3, 2007 at 4:35 amI concur on the 2407. I use dual 2407’s and never, ever lack real estate to spread things out. They look great, too, so you can’t go wrong with them.

July 3, 2007 at 1:29 pmI agree with Mike, go with as much screen real estate as you can afford. You don’t need it however. I edit HD on a 1680×1050 monitor just fine. Obviously, if you view 1080p content, it will have to be scaled down to your monitor resolution.

July 3, 2007 at 2:13 pmOk.
Is the scaling down done by the graphic card, the monitor?
Is it done automatically by the hardware/software set or do I have to do it myself?

July 3, 2007 at 4:35 pmPhil, it’s been a few months now but, as I recall, the scaling was taken care of by my graphics card and is done automatically.

July 3, 2007 at 4:40 pmCharlie, if you go with the Dell that I linked to earlier, it is an HDTV set, albeit without an NTSC/ATSC tuner 🙁
Inputs include Analog RGB, Digital DVI-D3 TMDS HDCP Compatible, S-Video,
Composite, Component and 4 USB 2.0 ports.
If you want to monitor SDTV, then you’ll still need a standard definition video monitor of some type. -

July 3, 2007 at 9:06 pmIt actually depends on the player used to watch the movie, but all players I have used, will scale down.
