September 27, 2014 at 1:05 pm in reply to: buying a new system for realtime 4k in davinci resolve

We are just upgrading our DaVinci system. With intention to maybe sometime use it under Linux licence (we do not own BMD panels that are required for Linux DaVinci version). Anyway let me tell a bit about config:

It is all about news E5 v3 xeons, we were waiting for them, there will be 2x CPUs: E5-2643V3 6C 3.4 Ghz, 32 RAM DDR4, all that will be put on new SuperMicro motherboard X10DAi. Similar price performance would be done with SuperMicro SuperWorkstation 7048GR-TR that is in DaVinci config guide. Just that that SuperMicro workstation is very loud system, so our will be custom build, water cooled so it can stand next to the desk in DI room. Regarding the GPUs we are planing 3x 980 GTX but are waiting for 8GB version to come out later in a month or two. PCI SSD wit 1800 MB/s should handle 4K DPX but 240 GB will not be enough. Existing Areca RAID will be put in but with 600 MB/s it just will work for 2K stereo probably but 4K DPX not.

Biggest help in building this system was actually a local reseller of PC parts (regional SuperMicro reseller). We were planing and checking all the details for more than a month now, and finally got all the pieces together.

But all that will be hooked to 2K viewing environment so no big plans for 4K, that is the biggest issue for me with 4K what I can render out 4K for clients archival or whatsoever, but do not offer 4K system if I can not monitor it under true 4K. That is the biggest misleading people are treating 4K. From my point of view.

November 7, 2013 at 2:58 pm in reply to: DaVinci Resolve 10 is now available

What does this mean in installer notes:
    • Stereoscopic 3D is not supported in this version

OK I understood this in beta stage, but now, if this is a release version… How come stereo is not supported? I did a job on 10beta in stereo, there are still bugs etc, but still stereo was working with a bit of trial and error method.

    Cheers!

Having same problems/ideas how to solve it. But hay I have done it one time on 2h30min feature 🙁

How to make all current versions as default versions? Would love that feature.

Only thing that ever did anything to get some more out of 5D H264 was the 5DtoRGB that decompresses the h264 files to prores4444, dpx etc… With that you could get some little more out of 5D clips, all other from my experiences is just changing codec/making davinci run faster no quality change…

February 25, 2013 at 2:19 pm in reply to: archiving projects

    Hi Dan,
I get your case 100% but in some cases they are willing to spent money on LTOs in my shop, what then? I hate hand file-by-file archiving. Something like “trim red files” that makes new directory with trimmed material would be awesome also for other codecs and media… Looking forward for a new version with integrated even smarter file tracking on disks etc…

That would be great feature! New tracking interface is good, also tracking methods are better, but usability of data could be better, smart object/shape tracking of tracing clouds are something lot’s of software can do this days. In between bat tracking data hand animating and compensating errors are the tools that make tracking software even better. Resolve cold be better in that, combining keyframes and tracking data together sometimes can be very stressful.

October 21, 2012 at 7:18 am in reply to: mixing GPU on cubix?

As far as I know, Resolve is limited to slowest GPU, so if there are 3 different all 3 will work as the slowest one. More than 3 GPUs and one GUI cards are not supported in Mac and Win Resolve, for more than 3 GPUs you would need Linux version.

Sorry for a little off topic, Sascha do you use HDlink? Only to convert the signal, SDI-HDMI (Decklink Dual SDI – HDlink – Displayport – HDMI adapter). Or do you use it also for calibration LUTs?
How it is handling stereo in this setup?
    Thanks!
