Yeah, happens to us every so often. Deleting all the render files with the render manager always seems to fix it.

[Kevin Wild] “Sorry, but I disagree. Why would you recapture? It’s not going to get any better if the original source footage is DV. Unless you are incorporating a lot of photographs scanned in with moves and/or a lot of text, I wouldn’t take all the time and huge amounts of space (I’m assuming you have a lot of tapes for a doc) to recapture.”

I’d tend to agree with Kevin, especially if there are loads of tapes involved. The effort isn’t worth the marginal image improvement.

There’s an option in the Log and Capture window which says something like “create new clip on start/stop detection”

Make sure that is not ticked and you’ll get one long clip (providing you have no TC breaks)

We’ve found that the only thing that 100% of our corporate clients can play back with 100% reliability is MPEG1. Old horrible MPEG1.

The real problem is speakers… Dunno how many times we’ve had a client phone and say – “there’s no sound!” only to discover that there aren’t actually speakers connected to the machine they’re using.

And windows Vista Business edition which doesn’t come with a media player. That’s going to become a pain.

July 12, 2007 at 8:48 pm in reply to: Making regular footage anamorphic

[Peterd] “They requested a full frame anamorpihc mpeg2 for thier delivery format. I assume they are unsqueezing it via thier broadcast.”

Did they say Full Height Anamorphic? 16×9 FHA is full widescreen. They probably won’t be unsqueezing anything. I think you’ll need to pillarbox your footage on a 16×9 Anamorphic timeline to create a distortion free sequence.

Why do you want to do this? Making a 4×3 sequence anamorphic will distort the picture… Everyone will look shorter and fatter…

[Daryl K Davis] “Mind you he did learn a harsh lesson about the differences between letterbox and anamorphic. “

There are altogether too many camera-ops out there who don’t understand the difference…

As someone who junked Media100 for FCP (back when FCP hit V4) I can understand the frustration felt by someone who’s system doesn’t “just work.”

We went through the pain of sorting out a reliable SAN, and trying to get Cinewave to digitise HD properly – but looking at the stable systems we have now I look back on those days and I’m soooooo glad we stuck with it.

How are you digitising? Firewire, component, SDI? What deck are you using?

Are the dots only showing up when you do a letterbox?

If you filmed with letterbox mode switched on at the camera end you’re not really going to gain anything by creating an anamorphic version. You’ll only degrade your image quality by trying to do it in post.
