capturing HD in Final Cut Studio2

There’s no such thing as HD DVCAM. It’s an SD only format.

I suppose it could be possible to record HDV onto a DVCAM tape, however. Is that what you have? If so, what camera recorded it and what are you using to play the footage back now?

Capturing HD as SD is fine if you only want to work with SD, but that’s all you’ll ever have. There’s no way to turn it back into HD footage by converting it. If you want HD we’ll have to figure out how to capture it as HD.

You’ll have to tell us what camera and deck (or camera for playback) you’re using (and how it’s connected to the computer) for us to give any more meaningful help.

Thanks Jeff, the tapes are HD Dvcam tapes recorded in HD mode. The camera used to shoot with was a Sony Z1P and i’m capturing the footage into fcp using a Sony Digital HD Deck via firewire. failing that i could use the same camera we recorded on to capture with.

The format the Z1 cameras shoot is called HDV. There is no such format as HD DVCAM. The Easy Setup you should choose would be HDV 1080i50.

I’ve hooked up the camera and have managed to get pictures going into fcp that way. thanks guys…. but now when I capture, its capturing only a few minutes at a time instead of capturing the whole tape? The weird thing is, the capture doesnt abort every time a new file name is created, the only reason i discovered all the different file names was because i was testing to see if we had audio coming through. Any ideas on why its doing that?

This is normal for HDV.

Because of the nature of the compression it uses, it is necessary to make a new clip each time the camera is stopped.

There’s an option in the Log and Capture window which says something like “create new clip on start/stop detection”

Make sure that is not ticked and you’ll get one long clip (providing you have no TC breaks)
