… and have you switched off any programs that run minimized, such as Norton?

Not good news. Have you tried uninstalling then reinstalling AE?

(save your preferences file somewhere first, just in case.)

Also, is Task Manager giving you any hints?

You can also try Photo-JPEG Quicktime at 89 or 94%.

    Filip’s right on.

There are quite a few mock 3D effects in AE. They basically make a “movie” of a 3D object, using AE’s layer as a sort of projection screen. If you were to make the layer “3D” then rotate it or whatever, you’d be rotating the projection screen, and that’s what you saw.

That’s why a lot of those effects give the little warning that they are to be applied to 2D layers.

(Unless you want to see a rotated flat projection screen for some reason.)

Read the manual under “make movie” and “render queue”.

If you’ve already drawn the mask you can apply effect>render>stroke, set to “all masks” if necessary, and animate the end point of the stroke.

Assuming AE is on your system drive (which is preferable, IMO), you should always have your sources on another drive. I suppose rendering to a third internal drive would speed things up even more, but I’ve never tested that hypothesis.

I think the benchmark comp 2 winner is fastest because of the RAID. (array of disks)

Also, search the COW for “secret” or “schecret”, to find the secret prefs that can allow you to purge RAM during a render.

Yep, it’s your system. Did you try Benchmark comp #1? It’s more processor-intensive, less disk-intensive.

Anyway, what did the render details show?
What does Task Manager show? Processor at the max? RAM overloaded so using the disk for memory?
Can you hear your hard drive thrashing about?

    Ah — of course.
