Call Adobe Customer Service. It’ll probably be a free call. Maybe not toll-free, though.

You could draw a bunch of two-point masks with the pen tool and apply effect>render>stroke.

Or you could use the beam effect. This is good if you want to attach the ends of each beam to each square’s position using expressions (pickwhipping).

Oh, man. If you want the photo to appear bent/crumpled in three dimensions, you need Digital Anarchy’s 3D layer plugin or a real 3D application. AE can’t do that natively.

3D layer, if it can do it, would probably use displacement mapping. I recommend using a spot of glue to fix a photo to a table, then crumpling it up slowly, shooting sequential frames with a digital camera. I think this sort of thing is much harder to do any other way.

Create all the elements separately, probably from scratch, do a screengrab of the cursor and cut it out, and make the animation in AE. Otherwise you just won’t get the resolution you need.

Technically, to get true streaming, you need to upload your movie to a streaming server. Otherwise, the movie is “progressive download”, which means that the movie will not play at all until it can probably play back without interruption. If your movie is short with a high data rate, it will probably need to completely download before playing.

There should be more info on the Apple QT site.

AE stopped supporting PS effects in version 6.5. Maybe 6.

    Anyway, they’re dead, unfortunately.

Get 2 GB of RAM. A current dual-2 or better processor would be nice.

Get the biggest hard drive you can get if you’re rendering to files larger than 8-bit. 320 GB can fill up faster than you think.

Look for the weak link in your bit-depth chain: try to keep 10-bit all the way out the door. Though working in 16-bit can look sweet, if you’re eventually rendering to an 8-bit codec, some of that sweetness may be lost. Maybe not all, but probably some. The solution would be a 10-bit codec such as Blackmagic, and the Decklink cards, for example. Then you need to output to analog or a 10-bit format such as SDI and Digibeta to avoid going back to 8-bit.

If you’re sending files to someone with the 10-bit hardware, you can render to a 16-bit codec such as Microcosm, then give ’em the files.

    Anybody else?

Speed of workflow. AE is a lousy editor because it renders every frame.

If you’re editing in the DV codec, cuts-only, in Premiere (or any Non-linear editor), you can work very quickly and preview instantly. Try moving a 30-second clip by one frame in an NLE, and try doing that in AE. You’ll see the difference right away.

Also, NLEs have tools that do simple jobs very quickly.

But AE can do much much more in the way of animation, graphics and effects. No comparision.

Yes, depending on your NLE and hardware($), you can edit this fast with other codecs and higher quality.

No, there is no hardware that will allow AE to preview instantly like an NLE.

Yes, you can achieve the same final product in AE, but you’ll feel your life slipping away with every render every time you slip or slide a clip.

When I search for “luma matte” in 6.5, I find:

Working with Masks and Transparency > Creating track mattes and traveling mattes >
Using alpha channel or luminance values for a track matte

… which basically contains a description of the process where you set up two layers in the timeline, “cutting” image above, “filling” image below. With the modes panel visible in the timeline, set the TrkMat button of the lower layer to “luma matte”. The upper layer will disappear, but its luminance will “cut out” the layer below.
