When I open a clip in AfterEffects (6.5 on the Mac) I appear to have the option to export a .mov with “fast start” internet streaming – using “Export” rather than “Make Movie” (Sorensen 3, quicktime 7). I was surprised to have this option as I haven’t upgraded to QT pro. Unfortunately, when I export and upload a movie, it doesn’t stream successfully. Has anyone got streaming working without upgrading to QT pro. I don’t want to pay to upgrade, as I will probably have to upgrade FCP studio at some point which includes QT pro.

Technically, to get true streaming, you need to upload your movie to a streaming server. Otherwise, the movie is “progressive download”, which means that the movie will not play at all until it can probably play back without interruption. If your movie is short with a high data rate, it will probably need to completely download before playing.

There should be more info on the Apple QT site.
