Weird. Have you tried the Blackmagic COW forum? I’m wondering if there’s a conflict that they know about.

Okay, so I read your post now, sorry …
… did you interpret the footage, separate, alt-click, then pageUp/Dn through the footage window to check the order? If it jerks back and forth, the separation choice was wrong.
Did someone do something to the footage before it got to you?
Are you sure it’s DV codec?Steve

Don’t you guys have Google?
Googling PAL,DV,upper,lower led to:

It depends on your codec. Some don’t like saturated colours. To which codec are you rendering?
Got a screengrab?

Create a regular DV preset comp (call it “preview”) and drag the widescreen comp into it. Scale it to 75%. Work in the other comp, but use this comp for previewing.
Sadly, I know no way of altering the external preview to letterbox a 16:9 comp. It would be a nice feature for those without a 16:9 switch on the monitor.

… and don’t be afraid to dress your talent in black tights, to stack the chromakeying deck a bit.
Note that some of their clothing was shiny, so they weren’t a complete silhouette as Chris mentioned.

If you want to do 3D ribbons and arrows that actually wrap around an object or interact with it, learn a 3D app. Try Cinema 4D, it’s well-suited to that.
It looks as if a general announcement needs to be made: If you want to do 3D motion graphics for a living, learn a 3D app. I’m not talking about robots and character animation, I’m talking about motion graphics. Even if the objects are “graphic-looking”, with no highlights, reflections, depth or shadows, if they bend in 3D space, interacting with other 3D objects, they were not done in AE.
Effects like 3D stroke are fabulous, but if you want control over how the stroke bends in 3D space and interacts with other objects, you need to use a 3D app.
Regarding Invigorator, I’ve just crashed my head against its limitations too often. It’s great for what it does, but you should know its limitations. Hey, know the limitations of all your apps.
As for other examples, if you search the COW for inspiration, you should find a few. For one, try https://www.justincone.com/tween/ and look at the list on the right.

Don’t use MP3s. Use something like QT Pro to convert them to WAV or AIFF before importing into AE.

Look in the effect settings for the stroke effect.

Try adding a touch of noise, or spreading the hues away from each other a bit if the image is rather monochromatic. There should be other tips if you search for “banding”.
Working in 16 bpc might be the solution though, as each operation on an image can cause truncation and banding, and 8 bpc might not survive.
