Does that mean FCP is incapable of exporting 601 compliant files?

Changing the smoothness to High on the “Kalidescope” track does improve the smoothness. Changing it on the “Kalidescope MT” track shows no difference when parked on frame 18. In fact, changing the shutter from 250 to the default 180 makes the blur go away entirely.

I’d prefer just to use a single text track with a motion tracker to match the pan of the sign, but the motion blur just doesn’t look right. That’s why I tracked the text by hand in the “Kalidescope” track up until frame 18 where then I could let the “MT” track pop on and track any remaining camera movements since the pan was nearly done.

WinXP XW8000 dual 3gHz with Quadro4 980XGL and MCA 2.2.10. I’m running this comp through Red standalone.

I had all of that set. The blur didn’t kick on until I changed the shutter angle from the default 180 all the way up to 360. Is that standard behavior?

In the good old days you’d farm out your effects work to effects specialists and use your Avid just for cutting. If not already over, those days are rapidly coming to a close. Some days it feels like Avid hasn’t figured that out yet.

Depends on how you want them to stay together. You mean for instance a circle with your text cutting through the middle of it? It can be done in Red.

Are you exporting a version 8 Illustrator file? IIRC that’s what 3.0.4 prefers.

The simple method is just create a shape and text track and dump them into a container. This only works with the container set to 2D Composite.

Take the same two tracks and convert them to spline objects. Copy the text’s spline objects (each letter) and paste them into the Face track of your shape using the Copy and Paste selections on the Composite window. Turn off the text track.

Also from the Composite window go Edit>Select All>Tools>Path>Combine Contours to merge them. You should see the text now cutting through your shape.

Try turning on Extrusion and turning the bevel down to zero for some interesting results.

Where do you enable Preview with Audio in Red 3.0.4?

I can bring a .wav file into the timeline, play it using the play button and scrub using the mouse (though the video goes to black because it can’t apparently handle multi-tracked comps).

I cannot define a portion of the timeline, do a CTRL+0 preview to ram (the video does preview) and hear the audio. Does it only preview with audio for the entire timeline?

That’s too bad. In a professional Avid Unity environment I might have as many as a dozen shares mounted along with several partitions on removable drives.

Without the ability to define a starting point to search it takes quite a lot of time to find and relink stuff compared to me telling the software to look in a particular place.

By ‘Search All’ I mean to tell Red to go look for everything that it thinks is missing versus me sitting there and clicking the links one by one.

Yes, those are always left on as the result without them would be even worse.

These are rendered out with Animation codec – is there a better one out there for Avid that preserves “resolution” better?

I’m bringing them in at 3:1. I’ve never noticed much difference with 2:1 and we rarely do uncompressed work here.

October 6, 2008 at 3:14 pm in reply to: NewspaperPi font Red 3 vs. Red 4

I’m pretty sure it functioned in 3 at some point because I have a project that displays the Newspaper Pi font as I used it two years ago.

However when I open the title tool the font reverts to something different and I cannot force it to choose Newspaper Pi using the dropdown menu. Accessing the font dropdown from the Control window allows you to select the font, but when you scrub through the timeline it reverts again to something different.

I know you’d like everybody to move on to 4, but it’s just not going to happen at this place. I’ve got folks chomping at the bit to dump all four seats of Red and move on to After Effects.
