Scrubbing to hear the audio
You can…
Press and hold K while pressing J or L to emulate a shuttle knob mode. Press K+J to turn the knob to the left or K+L to turn the knob to the right.
Choose a setting from the JKL / shuttle speed drop-down list on the Editing tab of the Preferences dialog to control the scrub speed and range when you scrub with the JKL keys.

Drag the playhead above the timeline to shuttle forward or backward from the cursor position (probably close to what you want)

Use the Scrubber Control Slider (bottom left)
Cursor keys do not seem to work. -
I looked at the manual for the V-Fire and it looks pretty easy to setup.
Check page 13 in the PDF manual for DAW set up. 16 separate channels can be setup.
Be sure in Vegas to have the correct audio device selected. -
You might try updating the audio drivers from within Windows 7 Device Manager.
In the Device Manager open the “Sound, video and game controllers” or something similar. Right click on the Audio device and select “Update drivers”. This will only update with the latest Windows certified drivers available from Microsoft. It’s worth a shot.

Try FFDshow codec, ffdshow is a DirectShow decoding filter for decompressing AVI, DivX, XviD, MKV, MP4, WMV, MPG, MPEG2(SVCD, DVD), AVC/H264, AC3, DTS, AAC with image postprocessing like video noise removing filters and audio postprocessing. This is not a codec pack but it can still decode many video formats.

Does Vegas see the all the files as legitimate in the Vegas Explorer window?
You might look at the files in “Gspot” to compare one that works versus one that doesn’t.

Sounds like a device driver problem short of a bug in the Vegas software. I’d try looking for newer audio drivers.
