  • Sony Vegas 7 won’t go past the splash screen

I run Sony Vegas 7 on a 32-bit laptop with Windows Vista. It was running fine just a few minutes ago as I was working on a project, then I went to open up a second blank Sony Vegas project and suddenly it won’t go past the “Initializing Audio Engine” splash screen. I’ve tried everything I can think of. I haven’t installed any new programs at all. I’ve tried uninstalling and reinstalling and using a restore point. Nothing. I’ve even tried going into the Data Execution Prevention tab and making sure “turn on dep for all programs and services except those I select” is on and then adding the vegas70.exe file. Nothing works.
I’m completely at a loss here.

    Please help.

This indicates a problem with your audio drivers. Does another program have them locked? Did they get updated lately? Did you try rebooting? You could also try updating the audio drivers to the latest levels.

    Hi John,

I’ve noticed it’s always you who winds up helping me with my issues.

Honestly, I’ve never done a single thing with my audio drivers, and to be perfectly honest, I’m not even sure what they are.

I did reboot, and I also rebooted in safe mode and it still wouldn’t start.

How would I go about updating the audio drivers to the latest levels?

    Hi Chelsea,

It’s very strange that this just started happening. Did you download any new software between the time it worked last and now that it’s not working? Something must have caused this.

To update the audio drivers you would go to the web site of the manufacturer of your laptop and go to the Support section and usually they have a Software Update link that will allow you to download updates. Try and find the audio software and update it to the latest.

If this doesn’t work, Sony technical support has tools for determining where Vegas is stuck and what might be holding it up. You might have to call them but try updating the audio drivers first.

Tell me about it! And what’s even more strange is that I had one open Sony Vegas project that was working fine and then I clicked on the desktop icon to open up an empty project and suddenly it started freezing at the splash screen. It’s incredibly baffling!

I have not installed anything at all since the issue began.

I attempted to find the correct audio drivers but the gateway website is incredibly hard to navigate and simply confused me. 🙁
I’m at a loss. I really need to work on a few projects that are due this week and right now, things are looking bleak.

Thanks for all of your help.

You might try updating the audio drivers from within Windows 7 Device Manager.
In the Device Manager open the “Sound, video and game controllers” or something similar. Right click on the Audio device and select “Update drivers”. This will only update with the latest Windows certified drivers available from Microsoft. It’s worth a shot.
