Could this be a Fat 32 format drive, and a 2 gB size limit issue? Sometimes the quicktime files will play off the Fat 32 drive, but when copied they are missing an auxiliary file, and report “no video” or something when imported to FCP.

Some stocking academic retailers will sell for $299 (usually on campus bookstores), but at the price of $899 academic, and $999 retail, the retail is a better deal, as it is upgradeable.

Check channels under the view menu, and see whether it is set to alpha. Set it to RGB.
I think you are showing the alpha channel and that channel is set to white.

You could check in system preferences, keyboard, modifier keys, and make sure that the option key is mapped to itself, and not turned off.

Thanks for the tip. Our campus isn’t a “stocking store” to get that price, but we worked out a deal with another campus store in our university system.

The conflicting information came from the Apple Rep, when I asked “It doesn’t make any sense for you to raise the academic price to $899 and lower the non-academic to $999, unless you allow academic to be upgradeable.”
To which he responded a day later that indeed the $899 Academic version was upgradeable. Which was wrong information, he informed me weeks later.

Of course, I’m referring to people that are qualified for the academic discount. I work at a film school, and even for the students, I don’t think it is a good deal at this price point.
So you have reinforced my argument, that the $100 savings for a student is not worth it for 2 reasons: you can’t upgrade (even if you are still a student when the new version comes out) and you can’t use it for professional work later, because of the license restrictions.

Check your item properties for the clips, the audio and the sequences. I think you have a time base problem.
I’ve seen this with students that use advance pulldown removal. Sometime they create a clip where Quicktime sees it as 23.98 and Final Cut sees it as 29.97, and it causes all kinds of sync issues.
You may have an audio sample rate mismatch, bit rate mismatch, or sequence timebase mismatch of some kind.

What I tried were the gain controls from the menu, and the corresponding buttons to those gain controls. Those didn’t seem to work.
I didn’t try the mixer, but thanks for the tip.

Just found that this feature kind of works with dragging the pink audio level lines up and down, but does NOT work with the Audio Gain commands (control [, control ], etc) or buttons, which the manual suggests should work.
Also, the “what’s new” suggests the Gain Adjust commands (via buttons) should work for this purpose, but in my case they don’t:
“You can now use Audio Gain (Adjust) buttons on a selected audio keyframe or the two keyframes surrounding the playhead.”
