What system you choose depends on what you will do with it.

There are pros and cons to each. I would say that if you have to finish on high end Avids, or you need to work or collaborate in conjunction with an established Avid based workflow, then go with Avid.

Otherwise, Final Cut is a great set of programs, and its quicktime based paradigm allows easy integration across a whole realm of applications.

I’ve known people that talk about how great Avid is, and people who talk about how great Final Cut is.

In the end, it’s the decision maker behind the tool that makes interesting things happen.

I export batch lists all the time from Final Cut 6.

Try trashing your final cut preferences. Here’s one of the places with instructions for version 6 and some troubleshooting advice:

How about importing the edl to make a sequence.

Then capture the video that need color correction in one long quicktime file.

Put that captured video on a video track about the edl’s video track. Use the edl as a guide to razor cut the captured video, after syncing it to the edl timeline properly. Then your captured video will be split into segments to match the original edit, but you won’t have to recapture.

Which is playing faster (getting ahead), audio or video?

My first guess would be that you are somehow dropping video frames during capture, and may have the warning turned off. How full are your hard drives?

I believe the license now allows the software to be installed on a tower and a laptop provided they aren’t used at the same time.

If they are used at the same time on the same network, the second to boot up will not open, as it will detect the other copy running.

Final Cut Pro is not applescriptable.

If I had this task, I think I would export the movie as a self-contained quicktime. Then I would export xml, or some format that would give me a list of the timecode location of my markers.

Then you could write a still frame export script in applescript with that timecode info using the exported movie opened in Quicktime, which is applescript aware.

The applescript dictionary for quicktime player has “frame” available:

frame?n : A reference to a frame (sample) in a QuickTime movie track.
elements
contained by tracks.
properties
contents (anything) : the contents of the frame (deprecated – use ‘sample data’ instead)
duration (integer) : the duration of the frame
index (integer, r/o) : the index of the frame
time (integer) : the time at which the frame starts

I don’t think it would be easier or faster than exporting each individually, but if it was something you have to do regularly, this might help.

Another option (if you have enough disk space to use temporarily) would be to export your movie from final cut as an image sequence, then find the images you need, and trash the rest.

I have been doing this with no problem on the same machine.

Are you following the procedures exactly, especially the step on the Firestore to “organize P2”?

A manual way to do this is bring all the clips into Final Cut 6.

Name the first one Horses Running 1.

Copy “Horses Running ”

Go to clip 2, past “Horses Running ” then type 2.

Etc.

When you are done renaming in Final Cut, select the clips and choose “rename file to match clip” and the files on disk will have their names changes.

Are you finishing on film? Also, do you have burn in keycode and timecode on your tapes?
