I went back and took a closer look. The monitor at my office is very dark and does not show a lot of detail in the darker areas. I can now see how they used colored LED lights.

I only watched the first min. I assume you are referring to the light streaks. All of the lighting effects were done in post. I saw nothing that looked “physical”. These effects could be done with a stroke, or 3D stroke in AE. They could also be created with a particle emitter such as Particular.

If you want it to look more real, just add some flashes of light that light the layers (3D). A lot of the lightning is behind the clouds and the bolt is not seen. You could hide the majority of the lightning effect behind clouds that are partially transparent. This way, you will hide a lot of what looks phony. Make sure to add light to the areas of the ocean that would light up due to the lightning.

I don’t have AE in front of me right now, so I can’t confirm this.

There should be a text preset animation for a text scroll. I have not used it. I am not sure how much text it can handle.
