I have created an ocean scene, lots of waves etc, and I would like to add lightning to the scene as well, but have so far been stumbled by any lightning effects.

Sure ive seen some of the effects of lightning but it isnt real enough or just looks too fake.

If someone could give me some ideas or point me in the right direction this would be great.

    Thank you.

If you want it to look more real, just add some flashes of light that light the layers (3D). A lot of the lightning is behind the clouds and the bolt is not seen. You could hide the majority of the lightning effect behind clouds that are partially transparent. This way, you will hide a lot of what looks phony. Make sure to add light to the areas of the ocean that would light up due to the lightning.

A bit of research on the phenomenon of lightning discharge might help, too. Although a film audience expects to see something other than reality when it comes to natural phenomenon. Lightning is an instantaneous pulse but folks tend to think of it as a slow-moving beast.

Some good lightning effects were in the original Close Encounters of the Third Kind. They were done before digital effects were the norm.

This is my standard sigfile so do not take it personally: “For crying out loud, read the freakin’ manual.”
