FYI, all drives will fail. Have a backup plan.

If you own either the original Production Suite and Final Cut Studio, your upgrade price is $499.

Do not partition your drive.

Keep your applications and your project files on your system drive and all other files (media, render, audio, autosave, graphics) on your capture drive (second internal or external drive).

Media and render files will slow your system down if they are captured to your system drive.

Your computer is not the only factor in determing real-time functions. Hard drives, RAM Capture Cards all factor into the picture.

I believe in putting together an HD system the correct way. Get the fastest processor you can afford, sufficient amount of RAM, HD Capture card, fast hard drive RAID and a true HD monitor (no cheap LCD’s).

Too many editors do the wrong thing. They then post here on the Cow and complain that they don’t get real-time, they can’t monitor their timeline, I could go on and on.

Yes HD can be done on a budget but it involves many components. The components do add to price. A cheap HDV camera and an iMac is the bare minimum you need. That system will not get you very far even if you have “all night” to render.

You will need to get an HD card or MXO box in order to preview your video. What you are experiencing is normal.

DVCAM is the best solution for anyone that does not want dropouts. You will get more millage out of DVCAM than any other tape.

Do not use Export using Compressor. Export a self-contained or reference Movie from FCP. Drag that file into Compressor and chose your setting. Hit submit. Continue working in FCP while the file compresses.
