  • problem with drop shadow on travel matte

Posted by Kim Rowley on March 31, 2007 at 8:32 am

I’m trying to apply a drop shadow to a travel matte (nested sequence), but when I do so, the image pulsates. Take off the drop shadow and it’s fine. I’ve tried putting a deinterlace filter on the nested sequence, but see no change. What am I missing? Thanks!

The first thing to always try is to Quit FCP, Restart the Mac, Open your FCP project and try again.

    Next:
THE FOLLOWING COMES FROM THE KEN STONE WEBSITE:
“Over 5,000 years ago Confucius wrote: ‘If you are toiling away, you have changed nothing and FCP heads South on you, [starts behaving in strange ways] then it is time to trash your FCP Preferences.’ ”

Click the following link for instructions.

    https://www.kenstone.net/fcp_homepage/trashing_fcp_prefs.html

A great way to do this is to use “FCP Rescue” a free Apple Script that will Trash the Preferences for you (and restore nearly all of your user settings afterward).
There are versions for FCP (Pro) & FCE (Express).

Download these free Apple Scripts at

    https://fcprescue.andersholck.com/
    or
    https://pistolerapost2.com/fcprescue/

This is one FCP tip that has helped in solving hundreds of “odd” problems.

    Kim,

About two months ago we had a discussion about this, you could do a search, but the upshot was that FCP’s DS does not play nice with alpha channels in every instance. I was bringing in Animation+ movies from AE and was getting the same flicker, nothing including nesting seemed to work, but I did find that some 3rd party drop shadows don’t do this. Boris Continuum is what I ended up using.

You can trash your prefs all day long, but it ain’t gonna fix it.

Thanks all. Chris, that’s just it. Strangely enough it’s very random. I hold my breath every time, and so far the odds are with me, with the exception of the sequence that made me post in the first place. Let’s hope FCP gets that straightened out in future releases. It’s a pain, especially since I don’t have BCC 🙁 Thanks for at least shedding some light on the why’s.
    Cheers

Are you working in 10 bit?

Don’t know about Kim, but I was working in 8 bit. I’d bet the farm 10 bit wouldn’t fix it, but I can try if you like.

Yes, Jeremy, I’m working in 10 bit uncompressed. What are you driving at?
I’ve tried moving the matte around too to set it on different lines, but it still pulsates… I’m using the same graphic design throughout my current job. Luckily most of them are working out ok. Actually it’s an idea that I got precisely through Walter Biscardi’s Part 3 tutorial on travel mattes.
    Thanks all.

The drop shadow in FCP when using 10 bit is pretty flaky.

Try using the noise industries editing pack plug in and see if you get better results. You can try it for free, but it’ll cost you $99 if you want to buy it.

This is a new fxplug, so it should render a little better.

Thanks a million, Jeremy. I’ll look for that plug-in. I appreciate your time. Cheers

Wanna hear somthing weird, Jeremy? Opened FCP monday morning and that same clip that was giving me problems is now fine. I changed absolutely nothing. I hate these non rational problems! I guess FCP needed some R&R…
