Green render bar is good. That means you have real time playback. In the upper left of your timeline, make sure your playback settings are set to Unlimited R, Playback Quality-Dynamic and Playback Frame Rate-Dynamic.

I’m assuming you have USB3 ports on your system. If not, you are not getting the full throughput of USB3. That would cause bad performance.

Usually indicates the hard drive is causing the problem. The faster the drive and connection the better the performance. eSata/Thunderbolt Raid=best. FW800 RAID=better. USB2=don’t even think about doing it!

Other scenarios:
Do not use your system startup as your scratch disk.
7200RPM drives. SSDs are fast.
make sure hard drives do not go to sleep.

I highly doubt FCP is the cause of your problem. Tell us what the make, model and connection of your drive. USB 2 drive?

You answered your own question. You need an I/O device to properly see the correct image. If you have a trained eye, you can calibrate your 42″ monitor to see a more accurate picture of your output. Keep in mind, Computer output from a graphics card and a Video output from an I/O device are different.

Z1 footage and mov file doesn’t mean ^%$# to us. What was the frame size and frame rate did you shoot at? What was your sequence setting? To what codec (h.264, ProRes, DVCProHD, etc..) did you export to?

You do not import Z1 footage, you have to log and capture it.

Use MXF Op1a wrapped HD XDCAM 35. You will use the Sony Cinemon plug-in for import into FCP.
