I was hoping to avoid buying new host cards on both ends. I’ll look it up. Any suggestions, or am I confined to just Apple cards?

You’ll have to blow some time but just export some QT reference movies and do the conversion in another utility or AE. No sense tying FCP with an export anyway.

Which process are you referring to? If it’s the “make offline” then clip modify, you can multi-select clips and do them all at once. The other methods, are “slow and stupid”, true.

Try this – it used to work in 4.5 but I think it didn’t in later versions:

CTRL + Click on the clip and Make Offline, but DO NOT delete the media – “Leave it on the disk”. Just “disconnect” the media from the clip temporarily.

Once that’s done, select the clip and go into Modify pulldown menu, then Clip Settings, then change it from Stereo to Dual Mono.

Then Reconnect the media. It’s been a long time since I tried it, and I might be mistaken that it works Stereo –> Dual Mono rather than the other way around, but give it a shot.

Another “long stupid way” would be to go into Quicktime with the file, press CMD + J select audio settings, change “left” and “right” to “mono” or “center”. See what happens after you re-import.

  • Did you happen to [gulp] update or upgrade your FCP software or QuickTime while in the middle of a project? Sure hope not. big big big big big mistake.

First, there should be no reason why you can’t remove any file from the trash. Makes no sense. Can’t answer that. you cannot open a file while it is the trash, so copy it off first if you hadn’t tried that already.

Second, look for your AutoSave folder, usually in Documents/FinalCutPro…. or on your media drive along with your Capture Scratch folder.

Copy off the latest versions somewhere safe.

Get Leopard Cache Cleaner [works on Tiger too], select Cache tab, select all levels, Medium cleaning, restart. Repair Permissions in Disk Utility [Applicaions/Utilities]. check to see if your hard drive is full, if so, clean off some junk.

Open FCP first, then try to open the latest autosave project file through the open dialog.

    Good luck, for starters.

    Two things:

Don’t export in any other format other than what is native to your footage/timeline. Use the plain old “QuickTime Movie”. this essentially clones your media without transcoding it.

    Second, try using this script:

    https://www.creative-workflow-hacks.com/2007/04/15/final-cut-pro-to-after-effects-scripting-without-the-hassle/

There are certain sw requirements, and the process is a bit tricky, but it is free and it actually worked when I tried it. but you really have to follow the directions to the letter.

The alternative, AKA the Slow Stupid Way, is to export the entire sequence as a single QT [or QT reference movie – though not a good idea for a long sequence subject to change], bring into AE, then park at the head frame of each scene and do CMD + D to split the layer at the edit point. This sucks but it works.

April 27, 2008 at 6:03 pm in reply to: SMPTE TC on audio trk 2, convert audio to TC?

Well thanks, I appreciate your candor. I did try your tool in Demo mode and it did not seem to recognize the data on track 2 as SMPTE TC. I believe I have it setup correctly, and I did read the directions. I can’t explain why it isn’t working.

I captured it analog. I don’t know whether that makes a difference or not, as opposed to optical, AES or SDI, none of which I am capable of doing at my home setup.

    Thx – steve

What I meant was the sleds where each drive is inserted — they can be either. I am referring only to the drive/sled module — in this case, IDE/PATA, not the means of connecting to the desktop.

    Thanks for the reply.

Can you tell me if any of your XServe RAIDs are the IDE version rather than the SATA version? I’m making the leap to think that the SATA upgrade process would be less of a big since the SATA technology is already more advanced.

Given that you mention 180 gb’s, I am guessing you have the IDE drives.

How long did it take to format?

Try Prosoft Drive genius fro drive maintenance, and also a freeware app Grand Perspective. GP will give you a graphical representation of your files according to their size, and then you can click on the “square” on the graph to isolate a specific file in Finder, then delete it. It goes into hidden files as well. Works on OS volumes, but don’t delete anything strange unless you are sure about what you are deleting.
