Ah, it’s been so long since I’ve been to the Cow…

Way back in 2003 I had originally installed FCP, AJA KONA and XServe RAID via copper fibre to a G5 (Now a Mac Pro) and was told that the copper fibre limit was 1 meter. Now, the edit rooms have moved around a bit and the 1 meter copper fibre length is a problem. I have found longer cables available online, but I do not know if there would be either a data integrity or data speed problem (or both) if I were to use a 5 meter length:

Anyone having a problem with >1 meter copper fibre to XServe RAID?

    thx – Steve Covello

Why not get some fiber optic transceivers and a fiber optic cable?

We tried to do a 5m copper run… and it seemed to work 90% of the time, but then 10% of the time we’d get all sorts of weirdness on that particular station.

Go fiber optic. it works beautiful. You’ll need a fiber cable with LC/Duplex ends and a pair of SFP transcievers (Finistar makes all that I’ve ever used)

I was hoping to avoid buying new host cards on both ends. I’ll look it up. Any suggestions, or am I confined to just Apple cards?

You don’t need new host cards – just a fibre optic cable and one of these at each end:
