  • Having an issue with saving my project – Please help

Posted by Sean Gasser on April 29, 2008 at 1:12 am

I’ve been editing this project for almost a year now.
Now all the sudden it won’t allow me to save it.
At first it gave me an error saying the file can’t be found. Now it opens up locate the file anywhere on my computer, but now that it doesn’t exist, I can’t click on anything.
Somehow the folder on the desktop got deleted or trashed. Not sure how.
I clicked on “trash” and saw literally hundreds of copies of the original file in the trash – including recent dates.
I tried dragging them back onto the desktop, but that doesn’t work.
I’ve talked to a few friends and looked in a couple manuals to figure this out, but to no avail.
Any of you have an idea?

Although I have a MAC and do editing, I’m really not all that computer savvy (in case you can’t already tell)

I’ve googled this precise error message and found that some other folks in the past have had this same problem, and they got some answers, but its filled with so much computer/techno jargon I can’t really follow it.

So if you have some ideas for troubleshooting be conscious of who you’re speaking with.

    Thanks.

Did you happen to [gulp] update or upgrade your FCP software or QuickTime while in the middle of a project? Sure hope not. big big big big big mistake.

First, there should be no reason why you can’t remove any file from the trash. Makes no sense. Can’t answer that. you cannot open a file while it is the trash, so copy it off first if you hadn’t tried that already.

Second, look for your AutoSave folder, usually in Documents/FinalCutPro…. or on your media drive along with your Capture Scratch folder.

Copy off the latest versions somewhere safe.

Get Leopard Cache Cleaner [works on Tiger too], select Cache tab, select all levels, Medium cleaning, restart. Repair Permissions in Disk Utility [Applicaions/Utilities]. check to see if your hard drive is full, if so, clean off some junk.

Open FCP first, then try to open the latest autosave project file through the open dialog.

    Good luck, for starters.

How much free space do you have on the hard drive your project is located? Sounds like it may be very full.

Have you tried the Save Project as… function? If not, try it – and try saving it to another hard drive.

Also, it is not abnormal to find copies of your project in the trash if you are using the Autosave feature. You will know they are from Autosave if they have a long string of numbers after the project name. This corresponds to the Date and Time the Autosave was written.

So on the brighter side of things, you may want to check the Autosave location for recently saved projects and see if any of them look close to the time around your system started acting up. If you can verify an autosaved project on or around the time you experienced the problem then I would try saving it to another drive, then try deleting some files from your main hard drive (to make at least 5-10% free space) if possible, then restart. You may have a lot of virtual memory usage on your hard drive that needs to be released – I’ve found this occurs when you havent restarted in a while.

If you have ample free space on your drive, then you may want to once again save off any version of your project you can find, then restart and run disk first aid, repair permissions, and if you have it Disk Warrior.

    Hope this helps

This has happened to us before, nothing to do with drive space I’m afraid, had to leave the project sitting for a while and then force quit FCP, then we trashed prefs and opened the last autosaved version.

Have you tried “Search Posts”? Enlightenment may be there.

Has this error before with Xsan and lately, standalone suites.

Project file on external drive? Try saving to the desktop.
