Hopefully these problems will be fixed in the next major release after all FCP doesn’t have that far to go to address all it’s problems and if the rumours are true that there is a major code rewrite being done then there could be some very good news coming.

You should see what the BBC are doing with their HD test channel – unbelievable quality. “Planet Earth” Brodacast in HD is simply the best HD I have ever seen. Apparently a lot of it was shot with Varicam.
To be fair they are really cranking up the bandwith, probably more than is commercially acceptable, but it really does make your jaw drop sometimes.
I’m looking forward to seeing what you and the team have done with your codec.

If it was me I’d go with your original idea. It’s not ideal recompressing HDV material to DVCPro HD but in reality the quality doesn’t seem to suffer that much and the DVCPro HD codec is easier to work with than native HDV.

when you change the easy setup it doesn’t effect your timeline settings – we use XDCam HD all the time and this method just works. you just have to remember to reset the easy setup to XDCam HD if you want to create another sequence.
Can’t help with the 720P timeline – there doesn’t seem to be a way to do this.

Easy – select “Blackmagic 1080 DVC Pro HD 50i” Easy setup and you should get real time output. I have a HD extreme card and it works perfectly with our XDCam HD material

all you have to do is shift fields on the 10 bit material and it will work fine!

Firstly – does the 10 bit material flicker when viewed on an external monitor from the FCP timeline? Do you have an external monitor to view it on?
Secondly as previously mentioned you need the “shift fields” filter applied to the 10 bit clips, check if FCP has done this automatically if you you’ll need to do it manually.

There is a general consensus that you should avoid editing in HDV and wherever possible I try to use DVCPro HD to edit, but there are times when just using the HDV codec is the easiest way to do it.

Easy answer just shoot to tape and then capture and edit HDV via firewire, no extra hardware needed and you’ll retain timecode. If you want to bump to a better format then dump your finished edit into a DVCPro HD or uncompressed timeline and everything will be re-rendered so your FX titles etc will look even better.
That’s the easiest way to work with HDV.
