You are correct. While preview on an external NTSC precisely calibrated monitor is the best method for determining how your project will look on a precisely calibrated NTSC monitor or television, it merely serves as a baseline. Walk through an home entertainment center with a bank of display TV’s all running the same program. Unless someone has spent a lot of time tweaking each, you’ll more than likely see many different pictures.
A well calibrated computer monitor will show you exactly how the video will appear – on your monitor. Once it leaves that environment, and is viewed on several thousand other monitors, it will look several thousand different ways. But at least you’ll know that it looked good on your’s!
