I’m using a Panasonic HDC-SD600 with a 16 GB memory card. When I brought all the video clips in through iMovie (because nothing else would recognize the camera) it turned into 70 GBs on my hard drive. How does this happen and what’s the proper way to handle video like this? It seems crazy to be editing a clip that’s 70 GBs in Premiere Pro that started at less than 16GBs. I feel like I’m missing something. Someone please educate me.

    Thanks…

My first guess would be that iMovie is transcoding the files on the camera from their native AVCHD format to something else that is less compressed – hence the larger file sizes.

    Any solutions?

If Premiere isn’t recognizing your camera, then I’d opt for an inexpensive SD card reader. It will then look like a regular drive to Premiere, and you should be able to import the native files easily.

iMovie transcodes your material to AIC – Apple Intermediary codec. This isn’t Premiere Pro’s fault.

Premiere Pro CS 5 and 5.5 would handle the original 16 gigs. What version of Premiere Pro are you using?
