I was recently enlightened by another COW member of a better and free solution.

First install ‘Subtitle Edit’, easily found with a Google search. It’s a free subtitle editor that has some nice features.

Then…

Create your subtitles in Subtitle Edit
Save as FCP XML + images (use PNG’s for image format). Each subtitle will be created as a single PNG graphic. Save these in a folder next to your project’s media.
Import the resulting XML into Premiere. When you import the XML, you may have to locate the first PNG, since they all will probably be showing as offline. Once you’ve shown Premiere where the first one is, it should locate the rest automatically.

Thanks Ann!

I guess I’m thinking that it was once available when sending a clip over to Audition, but maybe handles have always only been an option when sending a sequence. Seems silly though. I mean, why would one want handles when editing a full sequence’s audio, but not for a single clip?

I guess I should fill out another Feature Request.

Strangely enough, this began happening with me today. Haven’t had a crash in many, many months, then 4 today so far, editing the same programs I’ve been working on for a couple of weeks. The only change I made was to update my versions of FilmImpact’s plugins yesterday.

I’ve been using DNxHD to archive for a while now. I’ve had issues with Cineform footage before, enough to make me worry about it as a final archive. DNxHD is solid.

Here are a couple of possibilities, one very cynical, and the other slightly less.

1 – The original clips indeed do look like the ones that he sent to you, and he performed a lot of color grading for your edit.

2 – Here are two screen shots of the same frame from two different AVCHD files.

In Sample 2 I applied some grading, then encoded to an identical format.

Not common, in fact I’ve never heard of it being done this way, but I HAVE seen videographers, when asked for raw footage that they shot so that the requester can edit a new video with it send watermarked versions of the clips. Same end result.

Actually, it doesn’t. I have a timeline full of ‘soft’ subclips, and Match Frame merely loads the subclip itself into the Source Monitor.
