iPhoto and Aperture come with some amazing photo move templates. You can even make the the length of the video the length of a song so it will do the math for you. It’s worth at least taking a look at.

If you don’t have AE or a desire to purchase Twixtor I would recommend using Motion. It has an Optical Flow algorithm that does an amazing job at slowing footage down.

Sounds like you are having a lot of fun. You’ll need to post your video on the COW once you are done. I just finished a similar project in AE, you can check it out here: Book Trailer.

When I work in any program I like to keep things organized. In the Project Window I create Folders. I call once Folder Graphics, that is where I place the photoshop files. I create a Comp folder. If I’m working with video I create a MOV folder and etc. Since you have a lot of characters be sure the keep your Graphics folder well organized. Make sure each element has its own folder. You may want to put all of the character folders in one folder called characters and then have a folder for all of the back ground elements. Doing this takes extra work but it makes if much easier to find things once you get deep into the project. I find being organized saves me a lot of time when editing and doing motion graphics.

I’m sure you already know but just in case, you can set the Ram Preview to skip frames so you can do a Ram preview faster so you can see if the animations are feeling right. Plus the changing of preview quality helps as well. I really love what they did in CS6 for doing Ram Previews.

In Motion 5 Behaviors are applied to objects in one of the following ways:

Dragging a behavior to an object in the Canvas, Layers list, or Timeline

To apply a behavior to an object in the Timeline, drag the behavior to the object in the Timeline layers list or the Timeline track area.

Note: It is usually easier to drag a behavior to a camera or light in the Layers list or Timeline than to such objects in the Canvas.

Selecting an object, and then choosing a behavior from the Add Behavior pop-up menu in the toolbar

Clicking the pop-up menu arrow at the right of a parameter’s row in the Inspector, then choosing a Parameter behavior from the menu

Control-clicking a parameter of an object (including the parameters of other behaviors), and choosing a Parameter behavior from the shortcut menu

The easiest way to do it is to use a behavior. Go to the Add Behavior icon. Go to Basic Motion, Fade in/Fade out.

Two ways I can think of.

1: you can add a mask to the text and animate the mask with keyframes to reveal the text.

2. You can duplicate the time-lapse video. Add a Levels filter to the duplicate layer so the clip becomes a pure black and white clip. Then do a blend mode, luma matte or Add an Image mask…this approach will save you time but doesn’t always works, it depends on the contrast in the clip. Here is the big problem. If you remove the surfer and then do a move you will see the surfer behind the surfer. That is why it is ideal with a photo. Because you can clone out the surfer in the photo. You can remove these things but then you have a bunch of holes in your thirty second long video. AE has a clone tool but this will be an extreme amount of work.
