True, Final Cut had feathering capabilities of its own, but Final Cut wasn’t able to dynamically link footage between itself and After Effects. Final Cut had Motion, which was disappointing in its own right, so they kind of had to include extra features so that people wouldn’t have to round trip it out to After Effects.
Adobe Premiere 1.0 was released in 1991. Adobe Premiere Pro 2.0 was released in 2006 and introduced Dynamic Link with After Effects projects. That is over a decade until PPro was able to dynamic link to After Effects and you are saying FCP had to offer the feature because they couldn’t dynamic link to After Effects. This is something that should have been in Premiere a long time ago which is why this thread is so long.
Also, Motion is a fantastic program that has allowed many people to create really cool stuff and can easily handle a garbage matte that can feather. Also Motion introduced the ability to round trip with FCP in 2005. Apple called it Round Tripping but it functioned just like Dynamic Linking does.

It doesn’t make things any less irritating if you don’t have AE, but it seems like they’re trying to draw lines in the sand as to what can be categorized under “video editing” and what falls under “compositing and effects”.
I don’t work for or represent Adobe so I can’t speak for them, but I don’t think they “draw lines in the sand.” I think they want to offer as many ways possible to create cool stuff.
