Sorry Keith, I’ve never heard of that before. This must be very frustrating. I wonder if Motion 4 would work better. Only $299 for an upgrade.

If you are in the File Browser and hit the Command and 1 keys it will disappear. If you hit the Command and 1 keys again it will re-appear. But you already know that. So I think the unfortunate answer is: Trash your Preferences. Here is an article on how to do that: https://support.apple.com/kb/HT1885

Looks like you don’t like the Emmy Award. The Regional emmy for your home state will cost about $145 buck to enter for non-members. And they don’t post judges names like the Telly Award do. Plus they don’t tell you why someone won, other then the judges felt they where worthy of the award. It’s funny, I’ve never heard an Emmy refereed to as a “purchased” award.

If you click on the Dashboard button and nothing works I would try deleting your preferences. Here is an article on how to do it:
