July 15, 2008 at 7:49 pm in reply to: HIGH-END On-site / Off-site Training recommendationsHere’s an opinion from someone who has had the benefit of both on-site/off-site training as well as having a great library of DVDs to draw from.
First, I think comparing the in-person training to the information you get on a DVD or online tutorial is like comparing apples and oranges.
Don’t get me wrong: I love the training DVDs that I have and I use them regularly to reference a particular effect or process for doing things. However, note the key word in the sentence: “reference“. It’s great to have something to quickly go back to when you are hung up on an effect or project. We have many of the Creative COW Master Series DVDs, Video Copilot DVDs and regularly reference other sites such as Toolfarm, Studio Daily and Maltaannon for new tricks, as well.
With that said, our team just had one of the best on-site training times with Aharon Rabinowitz (who I see has already commented in this thread) on advanced After Effects CS3 training. We had a wide range of skill sets in AE, but Aharon did a great job of giving us tools to use no matter how comfortable we were in the program. Additionally, he did a great job of addressing our specific needs, including best ways to organize our files and streamline the work flow.
Granted, on-site training is more expensive than a $50 DVD, but I really think it’s worth it. However, right after Aharon finished his training with us, I ordered his AE CS3 DVD as a follow up. He didn’t just teach live things that were recorded on the DVD.
So… am I for DVDs or in-person training? YES! I think it’s a combination of both that can really help you fine-tune your skills. The DVDs are great, but they can’t answer your questions or even help you know HOW the effects work or how best to build things together for your specific needs or situations.

April 22, 2008 at 11:44 pm in reply to: Encore CS3 – C++ Runtime Error? Please HelpI just reinstalled Encore from the CS3 DVDs… It said it successfully repaired Encore. However, I still got an error message when I attempted to open my project:
AppName: adobe encore.exe AppVer: 3.0.1.8 ModName: backendlib.dll
ModVer: 3.0.0.0 Offset: 003964edDifferent ModName .dll from before with the same results.

April 22, 2008 at 10:28 pm in reply to: Encore CS3 – C++ Runtime Error? Please HelpNothing external… I have two internal drives, one CD-R and one DVD-R. I disabled the CD-R and it is still having issues.
I acutally began building my project from the ground up after this, and things were going well until I imported the subtitles…
The “End Now” dialog popped up and when I clicked to “learn more” about the problem, the following was generated (two seperate instances noted):
INSTANCE 1
AppName: adobe encore.exe AppVer: 3.0.1.8 ModName: sonicauthorcore.dll
ModVer: 3.0.0.268 Offset: 004e4e20INSTANCE 2
AppName: adobe encore.exe AppVer: 3.0.1.8 ModName: sonicauthorcore.dllModVer: 3.0.0.268 Offset: 004e5f18
I’m guessing the “sonicauthorcore.dll” is screwy? Should I attempt to re-install this particular .dll (or even Encore alltogether)?
Thanks again!

April 16, 2008 at 4:24 pm in reply to: Please Help – New User with Transcoding IssueAlso, my editors were saying that they were unaware of how to reverse the field order on their end.
(a) Is there a particular setting that could do this for them through Final Cut/Compressor?
(b) If not, should I just re-render through Premiere Pro using the “Reverse Field Order” option?
Thanks again.

April 16, 2008 at 4:04 pm in reply to: Please Help – New User with Transcoding IssueI did attempt reversing the field order and it looked fine on the output and a little jumpy on the computer. Is that “normal”?
Again, sorry for being elementary. Usually I’m worrying about getting content on a Jumbotron, not a TV screen 🙂

April 16, 2008 at 3:31 pm in reply to: Please Help – New User with Transcoding IssueI will double check. Disc 1 is relatively simple and it holds our “Main Feature”, so I was thinking about rebuilding the project just to be safe (since this was my first project EVER). It’d take no more than a few hours (now that I’m a little more familiar with the program).
Pretty much this disc has the feature (2½ hours long), a motion Main Menu, chapter selections (stills w/ background audio) and a setup menu that is basically “Subtitles On/Off”.
The interlacing artifacts show up on the final output disc. I’ve tried it on both a professional and consumer DVD player and the faster-motion footage (this is a hockey feature with talking heads and game highlights throughout) was “jumpy” on both.
Thank you for your time!

THANKS! I guess I will either (a) stop messing with it in Particular or (b) tell my boss that we can only do so much 🙂
Thanks again for the assistance and for the time you took on this. If you know of somewhere that I can get some good COW-like tutorials on Particular, I would appreciate the knowledge.

Okay, so my being a novice of this program is really starting to show…
I THOUGHT I was changing the media cache location, but it’s the “library” location that I was changing, hence the crash when it got to “styles”…
Also, when I disconnected the network drive that library was pointing to, it defaulted to the OEM library and the program started normally.
Don’t kick me out just cause I’m new at this 😉
