  • Nothing is GPU only. The GPU is great at throwing massive processing capacity at compositing, shading, and other things video related. But if you ask the GPU to add 1+1 it’s hopelessly lost. Also, the GPU has no connection with the system resources such as RAM and hard-disk except what the CPU told it to use.

I find 13 slightly faster than 12, bit 99% of my work is HDV.
You can keep all prior versions of Vegas on your PC, and they are all fully licensed. If you own a copy of Version 12 and upgrade to 13, your license of Version 12 is still good and transferable. The only difference is that the Version 12 license can only be used for one upgrade. Try that with any other NLE.
I have Version 11 on one laptop that I use as an audio workstation, I have Version 12 and 13 on my editing PC. All legally licensed. Try that with any other NLE.

  • Nick, asking for opinions about Editing Software is like asking about religion. Guess which church you’re in right now?

The decision of which program to use depends on too many variables to be selected from other people’s experiences. First question – is this a career decision? If it is, then you probably should go ahead and mortgage your soul to Adobe. If it’s just for personal use, then you won’t find any other NLE that is easier to learn than Vegas. But, I am biased. Let’s put it this way, I can do any given project faster in Vegas than an experienced Adobe Premiere user.

All the NLE programs are great… and they all suck! They are just tools and in today’s world they all will get the job done. But as tools go, some are better than others for certain jobs. The right answer for me could be the wrong one for you.

I have been using Vegas since Version 3, pre-Sony. I’ve never run into anything it can’t do for me, so I’ve never had any reason to try other software.

BTW – most of what you hear from non-Vegas users is either very old information or flat out wrong.

  • That’s quite a device. And reasonably priced, too.
So your only encoder options are MPEG and variations of MPEG?

Well, since MPEG2 is a delivery format for DVD and MPEG4 is a delivery format for online, that would seem to point to M-JPEG. But I know really little about M-JPEG.

Have you tried looking at the output file using MediaInfo?

  • Personally, I would use AVI as it’s only lightly compressed. MPEG and MJPEG are heavily compressed and really a pain to edit.
I’ve never used VLC as a recorder – let us know how well it works.
I am not sure of your workflow – does the Magewell dongle just write a file to your HDD? Video in and USB3 out almost says that it wants to make a file, so I don’t see where VLC fits in the equation.

February 20, 2015 at 5:21 pm in reply to: Multicam lags in fast forward…

And where are you seeing the lag, preview or rendered output? In preview try a lower resolution. What happens in preview is that Vegas has to create a new i-frame for each frame displayed, and to do that it has to start from the prior i-frame then work its way up to the current frame. That takes a lot of processor horsepower to do it in real time.

February 20, 2015 at 5:18 pm in reply to: Need Driver for [defunct?] Bella Corp Vegas DV Keyboard

Dave, like you I am hard on keyboards. My Bella editing keyboard still works the M and N keys are completely worn out, and for someone who never learned to type, this is not good. It’s not on my editing PC but I could never get the jog wheel to work. I prefer my ShuttlePro. Of course, I am left-handed and prefer the shuttle on my left.

On my editing PC, I go through three or four keyboards and mice a year. Whenever I get to MicroCenter (the only PC-like store for a hundred miles, I sure miss Fry’s) I pick up a few of their $4.95 mice or keyboards so I always have some spares.

Just a wild guess here – The AVermedia makes an MPEG2 file, and I’ll bet the audio is multiplexed and at a different clock rate than what Vegas expects.

In my opinion, MPEG2 is a horrible format to use for an intermediate.

The search feature of the various forums is pretty useless, so when I find a gem of advice, I put it into my Wiki. When possible, I credit the source. You are welcome to use the Wiki.
