A few things to consider:
(I think you said that this is a new computer off the shelf).Above all, I think that GPU support should be turned off by Sony as the default. Get the program working before you turn on GOU support and introduce an additional layer of potential problems.
Can you replicate the steps that cause the error to present? For example, run Vegas 12, drag a media file to the timeline, save the test project, close Vegas, open the test project. Build on the project until you identify the step that causes the problem.
Do you have any network drives or external storage drives?
Are Windows updates current?
Do you have the latest Video drivers? If this is a new PC, then the answer right out of the box is no.
Have you tried turning off your antivirus program?
Are you running Vegas as an administrator?Any of these can stop some process that Vegas is trying to run to stop. Especially if you are running a preinstalled virus program, which are usually overprotective crap. (I use Microsoft Security Essentials).
Also, have you removed the crapware (look for the program: decrapify)? Some of these install in the background and could be interfering with other processes.
I build almost all of my desktop PC’s, and even on the laptops, then first thing I do is replace the Hard-Disk drive (I save the original as a backup) with a larger blank disk and buy Windows 7 update. (Look for the family pack where you can get three licenses for about $129). Here’s an unpublished tip – you can do a new install from an Win 7 upgrade DVD. Just install it without entering the license key (it becomes a trial install), then run the install again, but this time enter the license key. Update sees the first installation as a valid Windows installation and proceeds to update it. If I need to return the laptop for warranty repairs, I just put the original hard drive back in.

When you start with one or two tB of disk space, a few Mb isn’t large (even though my programming career started when we were examining every byte of code for redundancy so that the program would fit on a 256kB EPROM).
But I can see them as a nuisance when your project gets pretty complex.
Perhaps my workflow make it a non-issue here because I routinely delete those files when I archive a project.
I do agree that Sony could do a whole lot better job with handling the temporary files. An option to delete on exit, to delete when the parent file is not in the Project Media list (a double-lightning bolt icon?) or put them into a sub-folder (tmp) of the project folder.

You can get rid of them if you like, but the next time you open the project in Vegas, they will be recreated. They are tiny files – just ignore them.

For best results, you need to set Preview quality to Best/Full
Not since Version 10. The screenshot is always at “best”.

The PID (Process ID) and Thread don’t really tell the average user anything. They don’t even mean much to a Windows programmer. The Analyze Wait Chain only shows the parent program – it could mean that the program is waiting for something other than a process.
Remember that Pro 12 is 64-bit only, so if you have any plug-ins that are 32-bit, you might experience problems.
I would make sure that Vegas 12 is working OK without any plug-ins. Uninstall everything and reinstall Vegas alone. Make a test project and add a plug-in then test again.
Other things to try:
Make sure that your GPU options are turned off.
Disable the virus protection.BTW – Typically you apply all F/X after you run multicam.

First – everything on the timeline is an event – not a clip.
What are you trying to do, because you can’t “keyframe” an event (or clip), you keyframe effects, mostly.Steve Mann

I have the Presonus Firepod and use Vegas to capture audio. I noticed that I can insert f/x chains in the mixer screen. Never had a need to try it but it looked cool.

It’s in the Video4YouTube instructions.
The Sony AVC codec puts the Mpeg metadata at the end of the file, so the player won’t start until the whole file is downloaded. The MP4Box software includes FastStart which moves the metadata to the start of the file, so the player may start progressive play before the whole file is loaded.
You only need this if you are hosting the file on your own server. If you are uploading it to YouTube, it doesn’t matter because YouTube will re-encode it anyway.
