Not bad, this gives me ideas! I’m sure you have thought of some of the suggestions below:

* vary the clip speed so that you don’t slow down close to the door – perhaps even speed up a little.
* no shadows
* play around with focus as you approach. I’d shoot a few approaches, with one on macro to really focus close to the door grain, for the effect of diving into the wood. You could even have a quick shot of something else that simulates actually being inside a peice of wood.
* Just fade carefully – don’t use the circle effect
* pay close attention to tonality and color balance on both sides of the door

I’ve used the “multiple paste” with good results. (I’ll try to post a clip this weekend as an example). Vegas has a paste Multiple feature in the menus under Edit from the top menu bar. I used it to get a super-slow frame by frame effect – I took a snap of about 10 frames, and then made 30 duplicates each so that each frame displayed for one second.

One thing I had to do to get around a strange problem with interlace was the use the Sony PMB tool that came with my video cam to grab the still frame. The tool combines the upper and lower interlaced fields into one. I was then able to drop those grabbed frames into the timeline.

It was a bit tedious, but only took about 1/2 hour total for 10 seconds of pretty good stop-motion. Better than nothing until I can save up $60K for a Phantom!

Might save some time if you pre-processed the stills in Photoshop to get them closer to what you need in size, perhaps pre-crop them? Sorry if I’m not fully understanding what your goal is – perhaps post a screen grab?

John, I truly appreciate your taking the time to post these shots. I am studying them closely. Although I see some CA (green edge on the light pole), it seems far, far less that what I experience with either the NX70 or the CX550V.

Question: what was the zoom setting? Any of these at 20x?

Although at least one tech at Sony Pro support is very helpful, they have not been able to fix anything – they are forwarding my complaint emails to “management and engineering”. Nothing else is happening.

I’m pretty bitter about the situation.

I see that two years ago Juan Martinez made some posts here on the cow – but nothing since.

Very disappointing.

Gene, 6-blade iris is nothing special. Here is the way to test. Point at something that has bright glints – water, a back-lit leaf, etc. Go to full zoom. Then de-focus. All the glints will turn into little hexagons. With an 8-blade iris, they will be little octagons. the more blades, the better the “bokeh”

You can also use this method to see lens imperfections (an old trick that amateur astronomers use)

The NX70s I’ve been testing have 6-blade, and I’m not thrilled with it.

Big, expensive pro cams have 12-blade or higher. You will see this on TV or movies.

Atomos support is great – have you posted the question? They responded to my pre-sales questions within 24 hours.

One thing you can test right away – connect the VG to a TV with HDMI. Make sure you can eliminate any on-screen info.
