Just a WAG (I don’t use iTunes out of moral principles) – could it be that the file is somehow locked because you can’t sync the same iTunes purchased song on more than 5 computers for a given Apple ID?

DO NOT buy it. The zoom is the least of your worries. I had three of them, testing and sending back hoping to get lucky. The killer problem is lack of sharp focus on the edges and the WORST chromatic aberration I have ever encountered.

BTW the firmware fix for the zoom will be out soon, but it is just a way to set the speed. The rocker is far too touchy. But I would have lived with it had the image quality been acceptable.

the 1080 60p was nice, though.

I just went through the same agony for several months and just ordered the NX5U, after rejecting three NX70s I tested.

I too am a bit concerned about the “smudgy”. Won’t know for sure until I get mine. However, I’ve seen some demo shots that look smudgy, and others that are super-sharp.

I suspect that the default sharpness setting is a bit on the smudgy side and I will be trying to tweak it. But, it might also be due to the fact that the NX5, (Like the Cannon XF100) has a sensor that is exactly 1920×1080 and there is no interpolation of the pixels. The FS100 has a 2.2 Mpixel sensor; 1920×0180 is 2073600 so I think Sony made that one a little more “dense”. High-pixel count video cams might be sharper, but extra effort has to be made to eliminate aliasing and Moire. My little CX550V is super-sharp, it has a 12 Mpixel sensor.

I’m very picky, and if it is not sharp enough, I will send it back!

John, don’t get an NX70! All three that I “owned” had the same horrible problems. It is just a CX700 gussied up with more manual controls and the waterproofing.

I’m so relieved that B&H allowed me to return it.

I just ordered an NX5U – will be here next week. Biting my nails. Wish me luck, everyone!

Does anyone know if the Content Management Utility from Sony works with the FS100? It works beautifully with the HXR-NX70 and the HDR-CS550V. (As also does the Sony Picture Motion Browser) . These Sony utilities seamlessly stitch together the 2 GB max raw files into finished AVCHD .m2ts files. I’ve shot literally for 5 hours and had the final files be 50 GB – with no problems whatsoever with glitches on GOP boundaries.

Roderick, I too am very picky about focus, and also (because I’m getting old) have eyes that are not perfect. On my NX70 (which I have returned), I used these techniques to get best focus:

* Expanded Focus is a big help!
* Bought 2.5x reading glasses to help zero in on the LCD pixels
* Don’t use Peaking – it is not as reliable as your bare eyes
* The viewfinder on the NX5 is the same as the NX70 – it is very sharp, and the diopter lets you dispense with glasses. I was actually able to get a better focus with it than the LCD.

Finally, if your NX5 does not have problems with back-focus, zoom in 20x, focus, then use that setting even for wide shots. (Test this before hand – if you have back-focus problems, this will not work).

Glyn, one caution about that FS100 with the stock 28-300mm zoom. That lens is no faster than 3.5 at wide, so I’m not sure how good it will be in low light. Of course, you could always buy another monster, expensive lens with a huge eyeball – I was looking at some Fuji’s in the $6K range … 😉

This sounds intriguing, but I don’t know what you mean. Are these “nodes” of which you speak those little v-shaped tics on the horizontal envelope adjustment line? And, how would one create them?
