  • Exact same thing is happening to us at my company. We can’t get any video to play in preview or timeline window. We hear audio only.
We actually see the preview footage on our wall monitor. It’s really strange, because this usually shows our timeline footage. You can’t edit this way.
I tried contacting AVID, but no luck so far. We uninstalled and put the older version back up on our system so we can work.
Right now, I haven’t heard of a solution.

We’re still running 8.5 I believe. Long overdue for an update.
However, the filler has been an issue a long time.
I think Pat might have the answer…a corrupt media file somewhere. I need to update, so I’ll try that. Appreciate your feedback.

Thanks. A corrupt file sounds logical. Time to update to the latest MC version anyway, so this just might be the ticket. Appreciate it.

  • AVID only imports photos in the project size. Thus, zooming in and out doesn’t work well! I don’t know why they don’t fix this. We use Boris Red on our AVID systems. It’s great for photo resizing, as it brings in photos at original size. Use the timeline within Boris to manipulate scale. There is a learning curve to using Boris, however. If you haven’t used it, it would not be a quick fix. If you have Final cut etc…you might want to do your photo movement there leaving plenty of room for handles…exporting movies….and bringing those clips into AVID. That would be a quick solution.

You should be able to insert the filler anywhere. Set an “in and out” when you call up filler and hit the yellow insert arrow key. If that doesn’t work….make a quick “title” in the title tool and insert that.

As I read this thread, I have a question. I messed up my IMAC with AVID last, as it won’t launch. I had the old 4.3 version…and tried to upgrade to 6. I understand I needed to uninstall and reinstall, which I didn’t do. I thought it would update on its own, like all other software. I’m a producer/editor and I’m actually a good editor. Just not an engineer…so I was flying blind. There is also a “deactivate” issue that I don’t know how to resolve with AVID. How do you deactivate a system and reactivate it? This is why we hire tech support at the office. Is there an easy “how to” to go over all of the steps to install and reinstall AVID? I know the latest version is 8.4..which I have at my office, so I know I’m outdated at home. However, it would work for many projects. I appreciate any help!

I’ve never had this issue in all my years. Are you in AVID FX? It could be zoomed in there. On a regular timeline, that is a strange issue indeed.

A great photographer you should reach out to is George Gifford.

If you need his phone, I can send along as well. But you could get his camera gear info and rates by emailing him. Hope this helps.

Perhaps this is silly me…but I wouldn’t transcode any of it. I would simply ingest like a tape. When you’re in “Capture” mode, Click off timecode, play the DVD and ingest manually like it was coming in from tape. It will capture the DVD in real time. You can actually just grab the portion off of the DVD that you need. OR use an application like Wonder Share. It’s about $40. You can rip any portion of a DVD with this simply by moving the “handles” and grabbing a section. Then export that as a Quicktime. Viola…you have a small clip and you can import it.
