    Some “obvious” questions:

Can you see audio waveforms in your timeline?
When you play the timeline, do the audio meters move?
Can you hear audio when playing in the viewer?
In your video/audio settings, are the audio outputs routed to your speakers?

Are you guys plugging your monitors straight into the Mac audio output, or are you using some type of amplifier/breakout box. If the latter, please suggest some models.

Although you might get optimal performance when DIMM modules are installed evenly on both risers, it will still work if they are not even (I know first hand). But make sure to install your biggest DIMMs in the first 2 slots of each risers, because access to slots 3&4 add some wait states. If you only have 4 DIMMs, make sure to use them in both risers because this will utiize the full data bus width. Of course, only install them in matched pairs.

Regarding striping – yes 3-way will give better performance than 2-way, but you may not be utilizing the full capacity of the 3rd drive. For example, for 8-bit data, you would write 3 bits to the first drive, 3 bits to the 2nd drive, but ony 2 bits to the 3rd drive. Actual data is 32 or 64 bits, but same principle applies.

  • Do a search for RAID here, there’s been plenty of recommendations. Also, I would look at the Arizona Mac User Group website for reviews of different storage products (amug.org). A lot of people here use RAID level 0 because it’s the fastest, but if one disc goes down, you lose everything. Best bet is RAID 5 or 6 – you have 1 or 2 disks for parity, but it’s also slower. You decide.

Have not heard of Kano, but price sounds reasonable. If you don’t mind handling hardware, you can probably build that system yourself for about $1200.

I have both FCP 5.1.4 and 6.01 on my Mac Pro. Both work no problem. All I did was rename FCP to FCP5.1.4 before I installed version 6. Did the same with Motion, STP, and Compressor.

  • I’ve had some lost renders on my Mac Pro, running FCP6.0.1. After reading about other people with similar problems, I decided to report the problem to Apple, too. But as I was gathering information for the feedback form, the problem seemed to fix itself. Strange. But I’m happy with the outcome.

Have you considered headphones or earbuds? Much better sound than cheap speakers and much more portable.

You can also buy Flix Pro directly from On2 Technology. They have a free trial version. They also have Flix Exporter, which is an FCP plugin, but it doesn’t let you attach a player to your flash files.

  • Does Flix Exporter allow you to output your video with a player (skin) attached? I just want the generic bar below the video with play and volume controls.

Thanks Grinner. I never even considered that codec. But now I’ll give it a try.
