You can of course do the exact same thing with an Emitter – just follow the same set of instructions. Set the Speed to zero so the particles don’t go anywhere.

You would want to do that effect with a replicator.

Create a shape that you want to fill.

Create a circle and hit L to make a replicator for it.

Set the Replicator Shape to Image and the Arrangement to Random Fill (or Tile Fill if your prefer), adding your shape to the Image Source well.

You could animate the number of rows and columns to make the shape fill up dynamically.

July 16, 2013 at 8:14 pm in reply to: OT Logic gets its “X”

[Oliver Peters] “While this is a strong product and great for X, the majority of sound designers/post production mixers (as opposed to musicians and composers) aren’t going to go away from Pro Tools. That might be different in Europe and other parts of the world versus the US. In any case, Pro Tools – and to a lesser degree Nuendo and Fairlight – is still the DAW of choice in the audio-for-video post production world.”

While I am very excited about this release and what it means for the FCP X ecosystem and Apple’s program for the future of the pro apps generally, I have to agree with this completely.

In my business (movie trailers based out of London, England), there simply isn’t any question of being able to work in Logic, even if I want to, as interchange between other facilities and our own has to be seamless and instant and that will continue to mean ProTools for any foreseeable future.

[Jeremy Garchow] “This is kind of a big deal isn’t it?”

And if they can do this for Logic they can surely manage it for Motion?

    Really terrific news anyway.

[Chris Northcross] “I know that I can achieve a “scribble” type effect using After Effects. I’m curious if anyone knows of a way to do it in Motion 5? Thanks in advance for your help!”

Here’s a tutorial that shows how you can achieve this effect in Motion:

You might be over-thinking this possibly 😉

Using the Preserve Width option means your border doesn’t get scaled with your shape. Not using it means your border does get scaled with the shape.

Both are desirable outcomes depending on what you want to achieve at any one time.

    Hi Tim

Here’s a tutorial I’ve made that follows on from this discussion showing how to use the various techniques I’ve been describing.

Because you are obviously scaling up a small rectangle rather than making it large to begin with you will also need to make sure you check the Preserve width checkbox, then you will always be able to achieve the minimum width of 1px.

    Hi Tim

Your question got me thinking about more efficient ways to generate the randomness automatically and I’ve made you this template project that is probably more helpful than what I shared with you yesterday:

    6253_interference.zip

Essentially what I realised is that you can create a replicator with those rectangular shapes that has a sequence behavior (with attached randomise behaviors) which keeps generating random blocks.

This is then applied as a mask to the scaled and repositioned Clone layer of your master composite.

In order to only see these blocks of the Clone layer occasionally and randomly, I used a randomise behavior for the Opacity of the layer – and then also applied a Quantize behavior to the Opacity so the Opacity would always only be 0 or 100%.

It probably sounds a lot more complicated than it is but it works just fine. I’ve also done the same with a layer of black blocks driven by another version of the same replicator with enough parameters tweaked to make it completely different. And I’ve even used that same Randomise/Quantize routine to add random frames of Bad TV by applying it to the effect Mix level.

Finally I’ve made a much better version of the random assemble and disassemble of the picture at the start and end.

Hope that’s of interest to you or anyone else looking to achieve this type of effect.

You need to select Under Fill from the Outline/Order menu, then you can make the outline as thin as you want.
