I have decided to go with the boxx solution with seperate 16 core boston render node. This should give me options and scalability if I do decide to one day go down the maya route.

Having just sat through a 3 hour render on a ppc I am seriously looking forward to being able to offload it to a render node!

Many thanks for all your advice!

  • Many thanks Brian, that worked a treat!

Thankyou for all your advice. I was wondering whether there would be any issues net rendering using a new Mac Pro octo (intel) as my workstation and my current mac g5 quad (PPC) as a render node?

I seem to remember someone saying there may be issues across different chip sets?

OK, firstly apologies for the confusion. It seems that a bip file is a mocap file native to 3ds max. After research it would appear that the equivalent for C4D is a bvh file.

I have managed to get hold of a basic walking bvh file and am now wondering how one would use such a file.

To achieve this effect you need to increase the number of segments in your object and have “edges” checked in the cell render effect settings.

For example if you create a cube, increase the number of segments in the x,y and z axis under the cubes object settings then render.

This should give you the desired effect.

Go to effects under your render settings, click post effect (top right) and enable the cell render effect. Have a play with it’s parameters to suit your taste!

Forgive my lack of knowledge, but what does caching in relation to C4D net render entail?

    Regards,

    Jethro

  • on the top panel below the drop down menus you can see 3 shutterboards. The one you are pressing to get your preview movies is the one to the left. If you click the one in the middle once with your left mouse button it will render the movie with the settings you have used under the render settings section, including your alpha channel.

Hope i explained this clearly enough. I had the same problem when i started with C4D. I must admit that it is not very intuitive.

This is something i was considering based on Brian’s post. Would there be any advantage to using a macbook pro in the set up (I need a laptop as well)? or would the issue with floating points apply here as well?
