Quicktime MPEG2 codec does not give you an export option, if you have compressor which if you have final cut you do you can export MPEG2 files.

Try repairing permissions, run the cron tasks if you haven’t already done that. If none of that worked think back and see if you can tie it to an applicaiton that you were running before trying to shutdown. Also try looking in activity monitor and see if there are any tasks that are stopped or stuck before you try to shutdown.

Personally if you are going to go to all the trouble of re-installing your system I would go ahead and re-install everything, it forces you to figure out what things you need and what things you don’t really need.

try turning off the external drive a see if that forces the computer to start off the internal HD. If not try running disc utility after booting up off the CD, and make sure you keep the external drive off.

I have tried it before its fine if you use it as backup, for system repair, but external interfaces are not fast enough yet. Its like running your apps over a network. There is a lot of lag, and overhead, that will make running decent apps tough.

It may be ok if you use FW800 your better off not doing that, not to mention I am not sure whether you want to be tied down that way to an external drive. That was one of the problems I had. Not to mention firewire sometimes can be picky so you just really open yourself up to all sorts of unecessary issues..

Don’t do it… not a good idea, there will be performance losses, things will be slow, use your internal drive for software and the external for media if your trying do that type of seperation.

Just be careful if you repair permissions off the disc that the version of the system that the disc boots into is the same as your installed system.. otherwise you’ll screw up your permission in a big way.

Some more basic stuff to try.. are all your drivers current? Have you tried unplugging your external equipment and see if that works?
Check with adobe and see if they have any ideas… Did the problem just start? If so think back to all of things that have changed since the problem started. If not… you could try reinstalling the app. but if this has been a problem for a while it is possible that it is a bug.

Think back over all of the things that have changed since the computer started having problems. It sounds like the problem is related to anti virus…

Try this:

Can you disable Anti Virus? if so try repairing permissions, if not try booting off the system CD run disk utility to verify the disk to make sure your file structure is intact. See if that helps…
