April 21, 2012 at 2:53 am in reply to: ATEM Television studio?

“IMHO, genlock is an artifact from the analog TV era.”

    Not at all!

It is CRUCIAL for applications requiring fast transmission, such as in a multi camera live situation with screens where the audience can see the action “live” as well as on screens, for example: live sports or conferences, houses of worship etc.

Just because YOUR application doesn’t require it, doesn’t mean it is obsolete.

My next camera purchases are very specific and MUST include genlock capability.

    Ymmv.

April 19, 2012 at 2:39 am in reply to: ProRes on Hyperdeck Studio : what about Shuttle ?

What I heard from folks at BMD today on the show floor is that Apple requires a license for every flavor of Pro Res as well as for every individual DEVICE. So both Studios are licensed separately as would be the Shuttle. It may not be financially viable to license the Shuttle at current prices or it may be forthcoming in the future. I have no information on that.

    Thanks/danke Gunther.

Mine was installed in my road case and left on in my shop. Hadn’t even gone out yet. Perhaps I SHOULD buy shock cases for the road production kit though, now that you mention it.

Appreciate the input, folks. Just after the wait and Bob Zelin’s review, I guess I was pretty excited to see it in person (it IS sexy beast!) And let down when it failed, more so because it failed almost immediately. That doesn’t inspire confidence…

Unfortunately, the design flaw is in widescreen SD. No intrinsic flag in the video signal for hardware to identify. The flag exists only in FILES, not video streams.

April 11, 2012 at 1:42 pm in reply to: ATEM MultiView Request

Blackmagic does monitor this forum and seems to take input seriously although one could easily argue the thing they don’t do at all well is communicate what they are working on to existing users and potential purchasers.

BMD is a company that pushes the limits of what technology can do at a given price point but that sometimes means you aren’t going to get the responsiveness you feel you deserve and they often miss deadlines.

    Nature of the beast.

I DO hope this request is being seriously reviewed and becomes available in an update soon. Additional feedback like yours helps to legitimize the request and place the request in the queue for review, I would imagine.

  • Brother Zelin… If you are at NAB with some free time I’d love to buy you a coffee or a beverage and commiserate together… Sigh

February 24, 2012 at 4:47 pm in reply to: Shuttle DNxHD MXF no playback

“Beta testing and paying for it.

    Rafael”

TECHNICALLY you bought an Uncompressed recorder that BMD has added DNxHD to IN BETA… You PAID FOR a recorder… you ARE Beta testing an add-on. These are exciting times… back in the $75k VTR days, once you bought it, you bought it! No firmware updates, no added abilities.

We keep losing track of that.

At $350, the shuttle is UNFATHOMABLE in terms of its abilities, although I agree wholeheartedly that more work needs to be done to deliver on ALL of the HyperDeck family’s potential…
