The difference between the image quality of BlackMagic’s 8 or 10 bit is neglegible. If you are an avid user, think of 8 bit as 2:1 and 10 bit as 1:1. What sort of problem are you having, what decklink card do you have, and are you using a broadcast monitor?

It possibly seems unfair and harsh for me, but I have been the unlucky recipeient of 3 lacie lemons. I am aware that all drives and manufacturers make faulty drives, its just been my experience that the Lacie is not as reliable. Just one girl’s opinion.

I have to disagree. I cut on Avid for 6 years all day everyday…I cut fcp for a year and a half. FCP is easy, avid is freaking clunky! I love the free form workflow of FCP. I have both in my suite, but sadly I have to refer to my avid manuals to remember the correct key strokes. And I often find myself trying to lasso parts of my time line to shift it.

My advice with avid is stop thinking and feeling and just stay in the lines. It will come back

For me to trust a Lacie drive. I order mine from Tekserve or otherworld computing(media) I can’t remember. They don’t get hot and they are durable. I carry them from client to client without problem

In fact I have both in my suite and I conformed my avid keyboard to be more FCP like. Its easier to use and it makes more sense. With Avid the functions are too far apart.

When I made the switch the only problem I had was going back to AVID. The damn thing is CLUNKY. I have the decklink card at home and at the office, and Have no trouble getting a digibeta deck to work. The 10bit uncompressed is less compressed that 1:1. I would see if you can get one FCP rig then import an Avid Edl (I hear this is possible) although I haven’t done it myself.

I have not had a problem with the timeline at any length. I only had improved edit experiences. Imagine not having to select segment mode, or trim mode, its always on. Just pick up a piece of video and move it around…its really cool. As far as the 720X486480 I can tell you that as long as you have the right card and the full non express version of FCP you can edit in 486. I’d be happy to discuss the change with you in more detail as this seems like a ranting and unorganized post from me.

    Cheers

Depending on your video card you may have to switch to your capture card’s dv codec to view on an external monitor, this is what I have to do
