  • Capture from non digital tape with Sony

I have a Hi 8 non-digital tape and a Sony Digital Handycam. in FCP I can get the tape to play and see it in Log and Capture and I can even control the camera from the log and capture screen but I can’t capture it using the Capture Now. When i hit capture now it just displays a black screen waiting for timecode. I’m sure it’s a simple issue…either it wont’ work, or i’m missing something easy. Thanks

Does FCP crash with this window? is there a spinning wheel of death?

It’s likely that your Hi-8 tape doesn’t have time code. FCP is waiting to get code before going into capture.
Try dubbing it to a DV tape is possible and capture from there.
Or go to the “Non controlable drvice” mode and put FCP into capture and hit play in the deck.

No, just a black screen that says Waiting For Timecode when it usually has the movie that’s being captured. The log and capture screen has the Camera controls, I hit the Play button and the movie starts playing in the window, then i hit the capture now button and another screen appears in front of the log and capture window. That screen usually has the movie that i’m capturing. In this case it is only black. SOny’s camera’s have the pass through capability to allow digital conversion of analog material. I’m just wondering if i’ve got some setting wrong that wont’ let me capture it. Obvioulsy there’s no timecode because it’s an analog tape. Hope that’s enough info.

#10 Capture now makes large file, Beachball

    Shane’s Stock Answer #10

    1) Set a limit on Capture Now. Never have that box unchecked. Set it to 60 min if you want the whole tape.

    2) Do not under any circumstances run any anti-virus/filesaver software. Including Norton and Virex. Sure, Apple doles out Virex for free, but FCP doesn’t cooperate with it very well.

If you absolutely feel you must keep Virex installed on your system then use Kevin’s script to shut it off before you use FCP:

    3) Do not capture to your main system drive.

    4) Check the format of the drive you are capturing to. It should be Mas OS Extended, jornalling off. If it isn’t, copy your files from it and re-initialize it. If it is any other format, you will encounter problems. If not at first, then eventually.

Using the capture from non controllable device worked. Thanks.
