    Waht kind of MAC (i.e dual 2.7?) and video card (i.e Radeon 9650?) do you have? What Versions of everything are you running (i.e Kona ver.?,OS X 4.2?, FCP 5.0.2? QT 7?)

    Have you ran the Apple Hardware Test that came with the computer? If not I would run that just to double check all the hardware and RAM.

    September 6, 2005 at 6:14 pm in reply to: HD-SDI vs SDTI

    Matrox has a pretty good document on it (https://www.matrox.com/video/press/papers/sdti.cfm) , the only time I’ve ever seen it used is with Sony’s XPRI system connected to an MPEG IMX VTR to do faster than real time transfers of data.
    From what I’ve seen on it, it just looks like a signal that carries all of the digital information that is on the tape for making direct dubs or copys.

    Besides if it were really better quality (or if SDI was missing something) wouldn’t we see it on the HDCAM SR series of decks?

    [James McKenna] “We are compatible with Nitris, and FCP. “

    To what degree are you guys compatible with Nitris? Can you open the same project file at the same time like unity? or just media? what about bins? I’d be curious.

    August 25, 2005 at 6:27 pm in reply to: MicroNet sancube for FCP editing

    Hi Max,

    What Jeff Bernstein is saying is that the SAN Cube is great for losing data, and not knowing when you’ll lose it. Basically the thing is a P.O.S.

    The most cost effective solution I can think of is Studio Network Solutions iSANmp, its all done over ethernet so there are not any expensive cables to buy and they have bundled the whole thing around how many users you what to set up in groups of 2. (i.e.2,4,6,8). It starts at 2 users w/ 1.6TB for $6,999.99. A much better solution than the SAN cube.

    Hope this helps,

    August 24, 2005 at 5:24 pm in reply to: Cannot install Panther on new Mac?

    I believe the apple document is more pertaining to the CDs that actualy shipped with the machines, for example I get a dual 2.0 that comes with the panther OS on the system restore cd, and I get a dual 2.7 that comes with OS X 4.0. If I try to install the cd that came with the dual 2.0 on the dual 2.7 It will not work.

    That’s what I get from the Apple Document.

    but…..

    I happen to have an OS X 3.5 installer CD that wasn’t included with a machine, it was bought as just the OS. So for grins, I installed it on a Dual 2.7 and have had no problems at all, ran software update and it updates it to OS X 3.9 with no problems, and final cut seems to be ok (the application opens, captured some DV but haven’t configured it with a capture card yet). We also have a dual 2.7 over here running OS X 3.9 with AVID express and it doesn’t have any problems at all either.

    So I guess, It could be one of three things,

    1.) The dual 2.7s need to be booted from a CD containing OS 10.3.5 or higher?

    2.) We’re working with older dual 2.7’s (about a month old from today)?

    3.) It could be how our dual 2.7’s are configured, Radeon 9650, 512 MB RAM?

    So not to sure which one of these is really the answer here but maybe we can get more feedback from other people.

    I guees I should point out that apple does not recommend installing older versions of an OS that ships with the machines but, do we always play by the rules when we need our editing systems to work?

    Oh Nevermind, Nitris = PC,

    The problem with using something like SANmp to do this (they do support AVID sharing) is that HD uncompressed requires a lot of bandwidth to capture and lay off to tape, usually this is done by striping across multiple RAID sets or LUNS. The problem is then the multi-platform part, Windows XP can not recognize a striped RAID set created in OS X and visa versa, So a solution would be to get one big LUN (or RAID set) that can capture HD uncompressed. This wouldn’t be a problem but Windows XP has a 2TB lun limit, so the volume can’t be much bigger than that.

    The problem using XSAN or ADIC Stornext filesystem 2.6 or FX for somthing like this is that the FInal Cut Pro systems are going to be ok, but the AVID DS Nitris systems are not really going to benifit at all they could store their projects on the same drives but when it comes to sharing there’s not much to offer.

    Obviously the AVID systems were made to be used with Unity, and the Final Cut Pro systems were not designed around any kind of sharing enviornmet (the reason most of them tend to work), put the two together and you’ll have to sacrifice funtionally of one or the other and workarond getting the files to be shared.

    With HD uncompressed
    AVID = Unity
    FCP = Many options

    There are some people using XSAN with AVIDs (not sure about uncompressed HD, and lots of workarounds of course) for example check out this article where they’re using LAN Share + XSAN https://www.xsanity.com/article.php/20050413152042711

    I guess It comes down to what you really need the SAN to be able to do between both systems.

    Hope this helps shine some light on the subject.
