X Serve RAIDs are very Solid and you won’t have to worry about apple not supporting them in the future. Have you thought about a SAN or NAS system so that everyone could collaborate on projects together? It might save you money having centeral storage and backing that up to tape instead of mirroring everyones storage, you could also keep a RAID dedicated to doing HD projects so that all your editing stations could do HD, like you siad if your not doing too much HD production yet then it’d make sense to not have to make that purchase of HD storage if not everyones going to take advantage of it. Besides imagine all of the time you could save from not having to look on all of those firewire drives, there’s another solution for that coming out soon as well, check out Postmap from SNS

I’ve setup plenty of stations doing HD from start to finish,

Actually it depends on the version of OS you installed originally, but if it’s in software update then go for it, the one thing you’ll want to watch out for on the X Serve RAID that can lead to drop frames is not allowing host cache flushing
here’s an article about it from apple.

    Hey Tom,

The answer is well there are a couple of ways to make this happen.

One solution would be to use a technology called iSCSI with a solution from Studio Network Solutions called Global SAN
    https://www.studionetworksolutions.com/products/product.php?pci=10
they offer the storage in a couple of different sizes depending on how much storage that you would need.

Another solution would be to buy an Apple Server and X Serve RAID, and use AFP, Although Apple may not support this configuration for capturing from Final Cut Pro, I’ve set this up before with sucess, though you may need a different Gigabit ethernet switch.

    Hello Ben,

If your using both 2Gb storage and 4Gb storage you’ll want to keep the speed at Automatic, although if your using it with only 4Gb fibre channel devices then I’d hard set it to 4Gb, as for the IO stream gaurd, you’ll need to set it to on for all ports that initiators (HBA / Computers) are pluged into and turn it off on all the ports that the storage is pluged into.

February 2, 2007 at 10:57 pm in reply to: Recommendations for a SAN

    Hey Roland,

There are quite a few options out there, if all 4 edit stations are capturing uncompressed 8 Bit SD then your looking at 90 MB/s (actually in the 80’s but just to be safe). So the one thing you want to make sure of is that your storage is capable of that at the very least, then next thing you’ll want to consider is how much storage you’ll need (i.e. how many hours of uncompressed are captured for each project and are four projects going to be going at the same time?) The SAN is built around the storage and connectivity those are the most important parts, the rest is all about how you want to manage it and what best suits your workflow which brings us to the next important part – SAN management software, there are many options out there including
    Apple’s XSAN https://www.apple.com/support/xsan/
    Studio Network Solutions’ SANmp https://www.studionetworksolutions.com/content/products/sanmp/default.asp
these are a couple of my favorites and the ones I have most experience with but there are many others also.

Feel free to email me or call if youd like to talk about some options,

December 12, 2006 at 11:38 pm in reply to: FCP “Unity” style

[macfreek] “- is it possible to share projects like Unity where more than one person can be looking at a seq?”

you can have more than one person look and edit the same project at the same time, unlike Unity though it will not update and it becomes a “Save war” last person to save to that same file name wins…so it’s not recommended that way but you can save it as another file name.

[macfreek] “- does it have the same workspace control as Unity where an administrator can easily setup and change ‘drives’?”

No, you cannot resize partitions like in Unity. But you can expand storage in the future without deleting media. You can Expand but you can’t make things smaller. XSAN uses Affinities (folders that point to different storage pools) to help manage bandwidth and control which group of drives the data within that folder is written to.

    Hope this helps.

Why so many partitions? Don’t you only need like 5 (one for each station) or may be 6 one as a spare to put misc. files on?

If the problem is still there, feel free to call or e-mail me directly!
